I am heartbroken to report that the renowned Koko has passed away. She only wanted one thing in life, which was to marry Big Mick Lane, but he would not entertain her suit. Some say she died of a broken heart, while others say of sorrow.

At least Big Mick can stop running, now.

Hi, Amos. Koko was an amazing gorilla who continued to expand human understanding of communication between species, the definition of and nuance of language, and compassion. I am grateful for her life.

Koko's favorite celebrity was Mr. Rogers, whose program she watched frequently. She was taken to visit him, and in his stage house she removed his shoes - because that is what he would always do when he arrived each day. There are a couple of videos of the two on YouTube.

Chongo has, of course, taken note of this as he does of the passing of any well known fellow primate. There will be a memorial gathering of apes and monkeys at Duffy's Bar in Chicago tonight and going into the wee hours of Saturday morning. Speeches will be made. Liquor will be consumed. Tears will be shed. Heads may get busted. We'll see.

I've read an article about Koko, and her story is very sad. She indicated frequently that she wanted to be a mother and was lonely for her own kind. She 'mothered' a kitten, until the little cat objected to the constant cuddling.

I think she'd have been better off in a place like Monkey World in Dorset UK, where rescued primates unsuitable for release into the wild are kept in huge, natural enclosures with their own species in carefully monitored groups. They have enormous climbing facilities and their life is as natural as possible.

No animal should be viewed as material for an 'experiment'.
It seems to me she was just an instrument whereby one could test the capacity of an ape to understand language and communication. That's cruel.

Yes, the Greys could have used Shane McBride that way, but they didn't, because they are not cruel. Instead they resurrected him through cloning, gave him a brand new set of teeth, and released him back to the wilds of Blind River, which was the compassionate thing to do.
