Subject: International football songs From: Jack Campin Date: 08 Jul 18 - 10:07 AM I think we could do with a thread for football songs you might hear at World Cup matches. I recently got a little book "Wer hat die Welt so schön gemacht" which purports to be a book of German football songs. To a British reader it looks bizarrely twee - the whole point of most British football songs is to be imaginatively offensive, and these are like Boy Scout songs, about things like the joy of getting up in the morning to go training. I'd bet there ARE grittier German football songs out there, though. And Croatian fandom got in the news earlier in the tournament for reviving Ustasha songs. How do you say "Who ate all the pies?" in Belgian? |
Subject: RE: International football songs From: Nick Date: 08 Jul 18 - 01:29 PM One of the reasons that I think the English team is doing so well is that they didn't waste their time and don't have to live with an official "England World Cup" song. Or perhaps the world is no good since Top of the Pops went off the air? |
Subject: RE: International football songs From: GUEST,. Date: 08 Jul 18 - 06:51 PM How do you say "Who ate all the pies?" in Belgian? Belgium has 3 official languages so choose between Dutch, French and (I didn't know this one) German. -- Official songs. Looking through this page the only England World cup song I'm placing is Back Home. The only other I remember is Scotland's from 1978 |
Subject: RE: International football songs From: C-flat Date: 09 Jul 18 - 03:49 AM A slight drift from "international" football songs but it's interesting to observe the differences between the football terrace songs of 40+ years ago and the current modern chants. As a keen, rosy-cheeked boy I supported my home team of Middlesbrough learning the supporter-clubs songs as we cheered our heroes. There was a little needle to the banter between opposing fans but rarely any more than that and mostly good-humoured, in fact the supporters club was called the "Ayresome Angels", named after our then home ground, Ayresome Park, and we had a particular favourite song: "Hello, hello, they call us Middlesbrough Hello, hello, they call us Middlesbrough We are the Ayresome Angels and we never miss a match We all follow the'Boro" Not very imaginative but indicative of the innocence of the times. Can you imagine that being sung out today??? The modern game doesn't go in for songs so much, with the exception of the very present "It's coming home", but the terrace chants occassionally have some brilliant humour to them. |

Subject: RE: International football songs From: Jack Campin Date: 09 Jul 18 - 05:30 PM https://youtu.be/mZkvs_hulCw That is a playlist of Croatian songs many of which are obviously about football and some of which seem to be creepy nationalist propaganda. Too much for me figure out at this time of night. |
Subject: RE: International football songs From: Senoufou Date: 09 Jul 18 - 05:51 PM Not international, but I absolutely love 'Vindaloo' by Fat Les! The lyrics are ridiculously funny:- "Me and me mum and me dad and me gran are off to Waterloo. Me and me mum and me dad and me gran and a bucket of vindaloo!" and "Can I introduce you please To a lump of cheddar cheese?" The video that goes with it is mad England personified in all its eccentric glory. |
