The Spanish have offered citizenship to Sephardic Jews for a very long time. I knew one who had it - he was born in Greece but spent most of his life in the US. To keep everything in order he needed to make occasional visits to the Spanish consulate in Washington, where his situation regularly baffled the newbies on duty who couldn't understand why he didn't speak a word of Spanish.

Pedant's moment: García Lorca's first name is Federico, not Fernando.

And I'd heard that the Spanish were awarding Jews citizenship if they could establish their Sephardic bonafides.

Joe, and everybody,
I visited Granada, Spain about twenty-five years ago for a college course.

Franco was gone by then, although recently gone.
The weird thing was that Granada is the home city of
poet Fernando García Lorca, one of the most famous Spanish poets.

And you know what? When I mentioned him at dinner one evening
surrounded by Andalucíans, they were EMBARRASSED.
Even after all these years, the Spanish Civil War long over, and all.
They suggested that his sensational assassination,
rather than his writing, is why people outside of Spain know of him.

And don't get me started on the racist graffiti ...

Catelonia and Galicia both have a strong sense of self identity and their own language.
FromWiki:The modern independence movement began in 2010 when the Constitutional Court of Spain ruled that some of the articles of the 2006 Statute of Autonomy—which had been agreed with the Spanish government and passed by a referendum in Catalonia—were unconstitutional, and others were to be interpreted restrictively. Popular protest against the decision quickly turned into demands for independence. Starting with the town of Arenys de Munt, over 550 municipalities in Catalonia held symbolic referendums on independence between 2009 and 2011. All of the towns returned a high "yes" vote

The Spanish fascists and their allies are using the Catalan independence movement as a pretext for a resurgence that threatens civil liberties all across the country. Much like Brexit is doing in the UK.

What is the political climate in Spain? I've always thought of Spain as a modern, forward-looking country. But there seem to be rumblings of a very powerful right wing that goes back to the days of Franco. And then this whole Catalan thing confused me even more.
What IS going on there?

It would not happen in the US. I've seen giant vagina Halloween costumes on TV.
