Subject: BS: New Doctor Who from Sheffield From: KarenH Date: 27 Sep 18 - 05:17 AM I admit I wasn't thrilled when the new Doctor Who was announced, and that I was positively annoyed at the thought of Bradley Walsh being involved, but as time grows nearer I find I'm looking forward to it. Definitely loving the Yorkshire accent. Any other Whovians on Mudcat? And where can you buy the stripy t-shirts/jumpers? |
Subject: RE: BS: New Doctor Who from Sheffield From: DMcG Date: 27 Sep 18 - 06:45 AM Don't forget the excellent line from the first episode of the reboot with Christopher Eccleston: "You are from the North!". "Lots of planets have a north". |
Subject: RE: BS: New Doctor Who from Sheffield From: Dave the Gnome Date: 27 Sep 18 - 07:45 AM Count me in. Originally from Salford (Where Christopher Eccleston is from) and now residing in Yorkshire. Also old enough to remember William Hartnell and the rest. Although after Tom Baker it all gets a bit hazy until the recent reboot. |
Subject: RE: BS: New Doctor Who from Sheffield From: Backwoodsman Date: 27 Sep 18 - 07:55 AM The best thing about Dr Who is that, while it has Mrs Backwoodsperson's undivided attention, it gives me an hour's guitar-practice and song-learning time, |

Subject: RE: BS: New Doctor Who from Sheffield From: Backwoodsman Date: 27 Sep 18 - 08:52 AM LOL! :-) |
Subject: RE: BS: New Doctor Who from Sheffield From: Jeri Date: 27 Sep 18 - 08:59 AM We're having a Who-a-thon here in the USA with BBC America. I wasn't looking forward to a female doctor, but now I am. Just needed time (haha) to wrap my brain around the idea. If there could be Doctors who were Scots, why not Sheffielders... Sheffieldios... Sheffieldites... thing. |

Subject: RE: BS: New Doctor Who from Sheffield From: Dave the Gnome Date: 27 Sep 18 - 10:32 AM We have performed a Mumming play with the Morris side once and hope to do it again before Christmas. I play Slasher, a valiant soldier who is slain by St George, although in our case it is St Georgina! I am then resurrected by the Doctor who is... Female! I am sure we can have some fun with both the resurrection and the female doctor :-) I also fancy getting the rest of the players to sing, as I am slain "That Mummer. Just killed a man..." :D |

Subject: RE: BS: New Doctor Who from Sheffield From: Helen Date: 27 Sep 18 - 02:24 PM I, also, am old enough to remember William Hartnell and the rest. My fave was Tom Baker, but also liked some of the others a lot e.g. Jon Pertwee, Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi, and disliked one & his annoying blonde companion, and couldn't seem to engage with a couple of them who seemed not quirky enough. I don't think I'll be watching the ultimate PC version. Transgender, yes, maybe, why not? but "let's make the female audience members feel included?" - Nope! Also, maybe it's just difficult after over 50 years to come up with good storylines, but it seems that the scripts over the last few years have been confusing. Sort of like a scriptwriter mumbling to him (or her) self in a corner and making not a lot of sense. IMHO. Sorry! (Note: I probably won't be able to help myself and I probably will relent and "check out the new chick", but I can't guarantee I'll be fully engaged with the concept.) |
Subject: RE: BS: New Doctor Who from Sheffield From: Jeri Date: 27 Sep 18 - 03:22 PM I'm not fond of meta plots, and things that take a whole series to play out. These things seem to be where a series goes when it's failing and nobody can come up with interesting plots. Helen, the annoying blond was probably Rose Tyler, and I liked her. I'd be very surprised at a trans Doctor, since it now seems he/she is comfortable being binary. Plus, there's always Captain Jack, if you want some diversity. Seriously, how would it happen that the Doctor would regenerate into the other-gender body? I suppose it would have been The Master's fault. (Personally, I'm sick of Daleks.) |
Subject: RE: BS: New Doctor Who from Sheffield From: Dave the Gnome Date: 27 Sep 18 - 03:29 PM One of my favourite plot lines was with Christopher Eccleston as the Doctore, Rose Tyler and Captain Jack in WW2 London. Jack and the Doctor dancing at the end was brilliant :-) |
Subject: RE: BS: New Doctor Who from Sheffield From: Helen Date: 27 Sep 18 - 03:31 PM Jeri, personally, I think the script issues seem to be in resolving the plot at the end. Interesting story ideas, scenarios, characters, aliens etc but sometimes they can't seem to come up with a satisfying ending so it fizzles out with a confusing mumble or a jumbled, half baked (in Oz language, "half-arsed") explanation. Not with a bang but a whimper. Yes, Rose. Annoying! Well, it could take 50 years I guess, to have enough of the Daleks. LOL. They used to scare me when I was a kid, when I first saw them. I used to leave the room, stand near the door and wait until I could hear that they were out of the scene. |
Subject: RE: BS: New Doctor Who from Sheffield From: Helen Date: 27 Sep 18 - 03:34 PM My fave plot line was back in the Hartnell days when they were tiny and the plants and spiders were huge and they fell down the drain at the end of one episode and we had to wait a WHOLE DAY to find out how they got out of their predicament. |
Subject: RE: BS: New Doctor Who from Sheffield From: Dave the Gnome Date: 27 Sep 18 - 03:36 PM Daleks didn't worry me as a kid but I did hide behind the sofa during the opening credits of 'Circus Boy' with lions jumping towards the camera! :-) Mind you, I was only 5 when that finished and 10 when Doctor Who started. |
Subject: RE: BS: New Doctor Who from Sheffield From: KarenH Date: 28 Sep 18 - 05:54 AM Circus Boy: hadn't thought about that for years! Mickey Dolenz, wasn't it? I can remember playing at being Daleks 'Exterminate, exterminate!'. I still hide behind the sofa/settee when Daleks come in - much to the amusement of the younger generations! I like meta plots and so on. For me, they give depth. I hope the new series does have interesting 'backstories' for the new characters. It needs a good actor to make a good Doctor Who, and I am thinking on the basis of the short excerpts available now that they have found one. |
