Welcome to our village........Lots of music, lots of fun. Poke around in the old threads and get a feel for the place. If you need help, just ask! Well ask someone who knows something......I don't know Jack Squat, but now I have met Jack the Lad, so at least its a step closer.

Spaw, you don't know Jack Squat? I've known him for years. I'll introduce you: you two should get along great--he don't know shit from shinola (god, do his shoes stink).

Odd you should mention that Seed, because I have now learned, from hard experience, the difference between shit and Shinola.

A few years ago I acquired, through an inheritance, 52,000 empty Shinola cans. My Uncle Ignatz had passed on after a prolonged stay at the Neil Young Center for the Terminally Screwed where he was being treated; not for collecting Shinola cans, but for the belief he was being followed by a Lithuanian hat blocker named Herman. After a long battle in probate, the judge determined that his wishes as stated in his will be carried out to the letter. Since he had no will, everyone grabbed what they could and I came out with the empty Shinola cans.

I ran an ad requesting a supplier for Shinola and for bids. The first call offered me a TON of Shinola for only $50.00 and promised delivery within the hour! I greedily accepted and prepared to repack the cans and market them locally for 50 cents each. I was ready to reap a tidy $25,950.00 profit! I really should have suspected something when the purported Shinola arrived in a truck marked, "Buford's Holsteins" but I was following the smell of money and soon my nose led me in other directions. Mainly it led me to the pile in my driveway which was being surrounded by neighbors armed with ballbats, rakes, and other implements of destruction. Several carried nasty looking automatic weapons, but since they had teenage sons, I wasn't surprised.

Well I'm sure you know what happened next.....My neighbors each took a share and used it on their gardens. Things smelled rough around here, but we all had a bumper crop of rhubarb that year and Rev. Hozimmall's wife won first prize at the county fair for her "Pickled Rhubarb and Okra" relish.

I still have the cans and have started using them to sort fence staples and carpet tacks. I can spare a few if you need them.

Welcome, welcome, Mev, and now you have had the honour of having your thread graced with one of Spaw's meandering stories! What a blessing!

Do ask if you have any questions, usually there is someone around who can answer. Take your shoes off and stay a spell.

Oh, and hey, Mev. Welcome. I tend at times to respond to the prior posting in ways that have nothing to do with the subject of the thread, as you've figured by now. From your screen name I'd guess you were another of our PlaysIrish people, our first from Israel. My propensity has occasionally irked some of our more serious members. Catspaw, Katlaughing, and I have noticed an occasional frown of disapproval cast our way for this habit. So I hope you weren't put off by my failure to acknowledge you in my earlier post.

Let me join the throng and say "Welcome, Mev!"

Seed, my grandmother used to use that "doesn't know shit from shinola" line, when she wasn't using her "doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground" line. Such a colorfully expressive family I come from.

Spaw, I am so impressed that you can take a line from Seed's post and write a whole comic routine about it in 3/4 of an hour or less! Maybe you missed your calling as a stand-up comedian?

Mary

Shalom, and welcome Mev, from Yorkshire, England. The wealth and variety of the Mudcat never ceases to amaze me. It just goes to prove that really we all ARE just one big global family! (Complete with our little differences, but much more importantly shared pains, joys and experiences).

And the faint odour of rotting orange peels that earned Mouldy her nickname really doesn't bother one at all, after a while...

Actually Mev, sometimes Seed has these acid flashbacks from the sixties, and makes less sense than George Bush jr. at a Mensa meeting..but don't worry about it. It's still OUR job to sort him out (or take him to the "Neil Young Centre" for re-training). You just enjoy yourself here.

Greetings from Way out West, Jack the Lad. The American West, that is, where we've got a great deal of nothing much and a huge sky over it all.

It's a bit like Holiday at Happy Acres here on the 'Cat sometimes, but between the rants some music does get discussed and some community does form. Welcome to both music and community!

Shinola is Wyoming's only export, other than coal and oil products. Lots and lots of shinola ... Alice can vouch for that. She only lives, what? 6 hours north of here, which in this necka tha woods is nuthin'.

Where's Yorkshire? That sounds fer-ign...

Well, well, well! A Tyke! One presumes you mean Leeds... but of course, I speak as a Derbyshire-born immigrant to Yorks. Been here 12 years now, and loving it. There are many Kirkgates. It means Church Street, and so to be specific, and to help any visitors our beautiful old towns and cities, here's a little tuition: The streets are called Gates, the gates are called Bars, and the bars are called pubs! Dam' right, Mev lad, you WERE lucky! Shoebox? Our'n were a wet paper bag wi't bottom aht on it! AND it wouldn't stay put in't same gutter. Eeee! when ah think on't, we 'ad a bloody caravan! We WERE lucky! WyoWoman, this Yorkshire dweller has been to Wyoming, and we could make ourselves understood with reasonable ease! We also managed the food, although the constant Coors and Michelob was somewhat of a culture shock! Still, we are quite adaptable, and the natives were extremely friendly. We like the place so much, we may go back one day.

I just have to ask it, and show my abysmal ignorance. What is Shinola? -Spaw(thanks for the tale) I must be excused , I spent my formative years working down the Pudsey treacle mines.Books were called "bukes"and used for the short leg of the kitchen table. We only rarely got to see The Yorkshire Evening Post,- through the grease and batter stains of the fish & chips. Aye,Mouldy, we were poor but we were happy. We were happy BECAUSE we were poor. Sat Night we went to a "local" (50kms)from here folk concert- chap called Dave Rovics- from Boston now relocated to Hamburg. Ecological/Political singer songwriter. Very good and entertaining too- see him if you get the chance anyone. Bye for now- Jack The Lad(Mev)
