Subject: BS: Nae Pasaran wins Scottish Bafta From: Gallus Moll Date: 05 Nov 18 - 07:04 AM Nae Pasaran, directed/produced by Felipe Bustos Sierra, has won a Scottish Bafta for best feature film. It is now on general release, tho you may have to seek it out in small cinemas? I first saw it in Spring at Glasgow Film Festival and it blew me away-the audience gave it a standing ovation! You don't always realise you are witnessing history in the making-- back in 1974, when Thatcher's pal Pinochet overthrew Allende and bombed people and buildings in Chile into submission, locked musicians/ intellectuals/freedom fighters in stadia then had them killed--it all seemed so far away, what could we as individuals do other than sing songs about Victor Jara? Well 4 men who worked at the Rolls Royce factory in East Kilbride realised they were servicing war plane engines that would be used to bomb their fellow workers in Chile - and they said 'no' - and blacked the engines! Felipe's father was a journalist who managed to escape Chile, and years later Felipe, a film maker, started to investigate the back story - which led him to East Kilbride. He discovered that the 4 were still alive! So he included them in his film -- alas one died before the film was completed. It is a remarkable true story, and one you should really endeavour to see! We have it at Dunoon Film Festival on Sunday 11th, with Felipe doing an Q&A afterwards. ( It is also on at Waterfront Cinema in Greenock.) |
