I missed this on BBC news / remembrance event today (thank goodness, would've blown a gasket!) but apparently they had a piper - or they filmed a piper somewhere at a memorial - in full kilt regalia BUT his pipe bag was covered by a union flag ggggrrrrr.
The College of Piping had arranged that lone pipers would play 'When the Battle's O'er' at 06.00 at various points around the country. (I assumed Scotland?) Locally there were two or three places chosen and tho I do not celebrate war I any shape or form I did go to hear and watch our piper on the hillside above the pier - playing in the dark before dawn in the glow of the red floodlights that were focused on Castle House and High Kirk. It was moving and I was glad to have been there.
(Wished I lived near one of the beaches Danny Boyle organised an event on, writing on the sand that washed away when the tide came in)
but - back to the union flag pipe bag -- I found that offensive and totally inappropriate.
Normally pipe bags are tartan or velvet. Maybe the tartan of his regiment -- if he was /had been a Scottish soldier. Possibly, just possibly a saltire if he was heading to an international football or rugby match. But a butcher's apron -- - no way!!!

...seems to be an ongoing campaign to ensure Scotland knows her place...in recent months many supermarkets have been plastering their products with union flags
-even tho the products clearly state 'rasps grown in Angus' 'Ayrshire potatoes' 'Aberdeen Angus beef'etc.
- many of us point blank refuse to purchase these items and have been complaining to the HQs of said shops. (I have no problem at all eating Cheddar cheese or stilton with a St Georges flag nor a Cornish pasty for that matter. But i refuse to eat Scottish products emblazoned with union flag.. losing our national identity!!

Calm down - at least they gave up on calling Scotland "North Britain" years ago.

Hahahahaha!!! - I (just) remember the blowing up of letter boxes (ok it might just have been one) with EIIR on them/it - totally incorrect! There has never been an 'elizabeth' queen of scots - or of united kingdoms (the only previous elizabeth was of england alone, while we had mary queen if scots) so -as it says in the song- how can there be a second liz when the first yin's never been?!
- mind you as a republican i shouldony gie a damn but....it gaurs me grie when the establishment twists the facts!!!

Maybe you mean that there has not been a 'previous' Elizabeth queen of Scotland, or of the united kingdom. But it is quite clear that the current monarch can rightfully claim that title.
Ok. She may not be 'Queen Elizabeth II' (from a scots viewpoint) but she is still validly "Queen Elizabeth".

This is like forcing Rhiannon Giddens to perform with a Confederate flag painted on her guitar.

Nigel -I realise that monarchs can do what they want (like change their name from Saxe Coburg to Windsor!!) But - you will find there are no EIIR post boxes or vans in Scotland! (Apart from a pillar box that was mistakenly placed in Dunoon a couple of years ago - hastily removed whoen the public noticed it!!)
Her correct title is elizabeth 1st of the united kingdoms (and elizabeth 1st of Scotland. elizabeth 2nd of england. When Scotlands king James VI became heir to the throne of england he was their James I - and known as James the first and sixth. The parliaments did not unite for another 100 years!
Many of us find it difficult to accept the existance of these 'privileged' people particularly at a time when food banks and rough sleepers have become a norm!€

To redress the balance, perhaps we should have a King James (VIII). Although as the last one was a constitutional disaster, it probably won't happen.
