Cars have one two or four exhaust pipes, trucks have one or two, the same as people. My car has only one below the middle of the rear bumper, just like people. |

I've had a Ford Focus from new, seven and a half years old, 105000 miles on the clock, original exhaust still going strong. Mrs Steve has an 11-y-o MX5 that we bought used, still with its original exhaust. QuikFit will be doing their nuts. |

It's two words ... Sounds ok, looks weird but I can live with it. |

AND talking about diesel exclusion zones, running down the car manufacturers and sellers, and I could go on........! But I'm exhausted. |

It was a '65 corpse (carriage? body?) with a '55 engine in it that had been turped in place by a home mechanic who had a garage with a work-bay carved into the floor. Nice job. We spray painted it and did some of the other touch up work. But it had very short exhausts, just poking out under the rear end , not even passing the rear bumper. So for the next three weeks of driving if the windows were up (closed) I had no problem. If the windows were down, massive headaches. I came to the conclusion that there was a slipstream backflow that incorporated ex(h)aust gases and we were getting carbon monoxide poisoned. The driving partner whose dad had done the engine work, would have none of it. Until the last day. MASSIVE headache. I maintain to this day that I lost precious IQ points during that voyage, and that's why Im here writing mudcat mss and not a goddam contender for the Bart Simpson awards (that's what they're called, right?) |

I hadn't heard of rolling coal - that explains a lot. The area east of Los Angeles used to make my eyes water certain times during the year, especially summer - and then it would be sparkling and beautiful in winter. This seems to have improved with the air quality laws of the last forty years, but maybe it's just that I haven't been in Pasadena during smog season lately. It sure is a beautiful city when there's no smog. -Joe- |

Where we live, right in the sticks, the air is like wine, no traffic at all bar the odd tractor, and this time of year the odd oil tanker (we have one coming on Monday to deliver our kerosene) We have our bedroom window open all night and the fresh pure air is gorgeous. One thing I noticed about London when we went down on a day trip was the poisonous air in the streets. Our throats were quite sore when we got back to our village. If I had to live in London I reckon I'd choke to death! |

(Nissan LEAF, and yesterday I was pleased to find myself behind another one in my home town traffic) Relevant to original post too: buses (school or otherwise) are an ideal candidate for electric power, considering they spend much time standing still with the engine running polluting the air that the children breathe, and they don't have to go very far or very fast. |

Our newer buses in Edinburgh all have automatic cut-out when at a stop so hopefully reducing overall emissions. My car also supposedly has it, but it doesn't work most of the time! |

The wood-burning stove figure is mainly because people burn damp wood, peat and coal in their stoves as I understand it. The British government has a list of acceptable stoves (which "double-burn" wood) and most modern stoves are on this. Efficient stoves burn brightly with little smoke, and produce, like Mudcat at times, more heat than light. |

Subject: RE: BS: Vehicle exhaust pipes From: Senoufou Date: 10 Dec 18 - 11:34 AM One or two of our neighbours burn old fence panels (complete with vestiges of creosote on them) old pallets, damp/mouldy wood from rotten branches, cardboard, their own rubbish and suchlike. Sometimes it smells as if they're cremating a body. (Could be so I suppose hee hee) They tow trailers behind their tractors loaded with this combustible material. Normally the wind here is quite strong and whisks away any smoke, but if it's a cold, still evening the pollution is pretty bad. The smoke coming out of their chimneys is often a queer orangey-brown colour, or thick black billows. Also, they all installed their wood burners themselves, and since we're all in bungalows, the chimneys aren't high enough to get the smoke away, and it descends around us all like a fog. Gosh it felt good getting all that moaning of my chest! |

My sister has visited Auschwitz with her daughter (a student at the time) and they both cried like anything. The atmosphere was overwhelming. I know I couldn't bear to go there, it would be far too painful. |
