One evening, the television was tuned to the PBS public network.

The filmed event broadcast featured the late Merce Cunningham and his modern dance troupe.

Mr. Cunningham himself appeared quietly in the middle of his dancers, doing something I have never seen done elsewhere.

He had had constructed for him,
a knitted jumper/sweater with two -- count 'em, two -- pairs of long sleeves, that means four sleeves altogether,
and no neckhole.

Mr. Cunningham, with body language conveying steady mental concentration and calm confidence,
covered head and shoulders with the body of the garment,
and quietly, smoothly pulled sleeve after sleeve
on and off of his arms,
with his head completely swathed in sweater.

I can still see it now.
