I really want to spend a month in Berlin, but I don't know if it's going to happen. I've been postponing it for years.

A proper schedule and organisation. Getting a second bank account that has a specific amount of money transferred out every week, leaving enough for the regular bills. Less screen time, more page time, more riverside time, more friends time.

I am going to retire so I am going to sleep until 11 a.m. as much as I want and only wear flannel well except for more formal occasions

If the formal occasions include meeting politicians, they'll provide plenty of flannel.

Mary, I'm sure they make black flannel that you can use for those more formal occasions!

I need to pass through from the recovery phase of retirement into the productive phase. There's a lot of stuff around here I want to do, and I need to schedule my time to get to doing these projects. (But also not beat up on myself for having been slow to start - since I fought my way out of a really dysfunctional workplace it does take a while, and as Mary notes, quite a few mornings of sleeping in, to feel better.)

I can safely say that I will not spend a month in Berlin, or have a proper schedule and organisation, or sleep until 11 am (unless I am very ill), or meet politicians unless by accident, and I will definitely not be painting kindness rocks.
As for being compassionate? Well, maybe - it depends ...

I will try to be more selective and discriminating when in charity shops, and I might try to sell some of my more injudicious charity shop acquisitions on eBay.

Charity shops want your store of plastic bags.

I heard it said that of all the millions of plastic carrier bags in the country, 60% are "in the cupboard under the stairs" - unverifiable, of course, but we know what they mean.

As for giving the bags to charity shops, check with the charity shop first. There is no point in giving them useful bags just for the bags to be chucked in the bin.

I don't make New Year's promises. I can't even relate to the arbitrary concept of the "New Year". It seems like complete nonsense to me....and I think every creature that is living naturally in the world of Nature would agree. It is a meaningless concept, the result of an arbitrary calendar put together a very long time ago by the Romans.

Now, the Winter Solstice....well, that's real.

I always intend to keep any promises that I make. Achieving that end is another matter.

Don't promises have to be made TO somebody, even if it is to yourself?
Resolutions can be made without reference to any one else. You make them for yourself alone, whether or not you tell others about them or not.

Properly speaking a promise made to yourself might better be called a pledge. Either way, a genuine promise or pledge requires a genuine intention to hold to it.

Next year I will teach myself (with the aid of dvds, instruction manual and YouTube to play Bottleneck guitar. After mastering that I shall accompany myself singing in a pseudo Mississippi accent and not my Humber Delta/Sunderland real voice.
Whooops! There goes a flying pig !! :-)
Merry Christmas everybody

Does Kevin Brown still do his bottleneck one day seminar. It will get you playing bottleneck. Worked for me.

It was 75 quid. It was held at the same room in the Royal Geographical Society Rooms in Bath, the same room Charles Darwin delivered his Origin of the Species paper.

I bought the cheapest guitar I could off ebay. When I got there - the local music shop set it up perfectly to play slide. There was a stall selling beautiful glass slides, made by a guy called Ian MacWee. Diamond Slides.

There were two seminars with Kevin and another Lancashire lad, both wonderful players. They were both good teachers, and really approachable. There was a buffet lunch with tea and coffee thrown in, and a concert with both experts plaing that night. The climax I remember was Robert Johson's travelling Riverside Blues.

I just came home back to Nottingham, full of excitement , I sat down and wrote three full pages of all the things I'd learned, before I forgot a single thing.

Massive de-clutter of house and garage: been in the same one for 32 years now, and it shows. Haven't been able to get car in garage for at least the last 20 of them!
Of course, my stuff is all essential, much of it to do with music: husband just hoards any old thing, in case he might mend it one day, even though we have already replaced it.
We're in our 70s now, so need to do it, and not leave it for the kids to sort out. (They have already hinted at that!)
I'll report any positive progress on the new de-clutter 2019 thread.

Good luck with the massive de-clutter, Tattie; probably most of us here can identify with that need!

I actually have a real intention to sing more genuinely traditional folk songs, and fewer popular songs, at folk club singarounds in 2019.

You heard it here first, Jim! ;-)

The real essence of bottleneck is really simple.

Give yourself the best chance by getting a guitar set up. Get an electronic tuner chromatic. In folk blues - there are two main tunings - the E or D major chord, or the modal G - DGDGBD. Although my best piece was written in D minor.

Then you concentrate on getting the note really clear. Don't worry at all about the volume, concentrate on purity. it will be quiet initially . Then when you have a couple of riffs, start working out how to big up the volume. Don't let purists give you advice - use anything, (ANYTHING!) to attain the sound initially - amplification, ludicrously high action - anything.

Really good slide guitarists (like Kevin Brown and Bryn Haworth) can produce great slide sounds on any guitar - any setting. Its to do with feel. But first you need to attain the sound. To know what that feels like.

Best of luck in 2019. Its not easy, but its another voice in which your guitar can sing. And it will help you find the things about which you want to sing

This a piece in G tuning I wrote about my Aunty Nelly, who lived in St. Helens and used to like to get off with the Yank airmen at nearby Burtonwood aerodrome.
