Subject: Folklore: Yalda Night From: Jack Campin Date: 22 Dec 18 - 06:24 AM I only just learned about this. A bunch of Edinburgh Iranians (world-class party animals) are having a celebration tonight. Yalda Night Dates back at least to Zoroaster, the name is possibly cognate with Nordic Yule, but despite its indisputably pre-Islamic character, it only became an official public date in Iran in 2008 under the Islamic Republic (maybe as an up-yours to the Saudis? I'll see f I can find out). Edinburgh party |
Subject: RE: Folklore: Yalda Night From: Jos Date: 22 Dec 18 - 07:03 AM I found an overview of the tradition(s) here: http://farsinet.com/norooz/yalda.html Sounds like a universal Christmas/Solstice/New Year/Yule ... |
Subject: RE: Folklore: Yalda Night From: Joe Offer Date: 22 Dec 18 - 02:31 PM How is the date determined, Jack? I suppose it's not by the Western calendar, but it could be a solar date like our solstice. |
Subject: RE: Folklore: Yalda Night From: Jack Campin Date: 22 Dec 18 - 04:12 PM It's a solstice event - must have originally been in the Zoriastrian calendar. |
Subject: RE: Folklore: Yalda Night From: Jos Date: 22 Dec 18 - 04:22 PM Does the party always happen on the 22nd, or is it held at the nearest weekend? |
