@leeneia, @senoufou, @mathematicianwhocanexplainthisplease

... I'm not sure how to compare
1.6% per year
with
25% in a lifetime

Interestingly, from leeneia's article (clicky https://www.healthline.com/health-news/black-men-twice-as-likely-to-die-from-prostate-cancer#1 )the link they refer to doesn't actually quote those figures(well I couldn't see them) but it says
"African-American men have about a 15 percent chance of developing prostate cancer in their lifetimes,..."

the thread title with a Scottish burr,
but I can't think of one.

Gurney: Ha, ha, just what I thought! (And how often people get the 2 words mixed up!)
Burns was only 37 when he died, with lots of other medical problems (probable rheumatic carditis): he was statistically, anyway, a bit young for either benign prostate hyperplasia or prostate cancer, tho' his consorting with multiple partners might well have resulted in other problems in that area!

Prostate Cancer UK charity says '1 in 4 black men will get prostate cancer at some time in their lives.' (It was this organisation which commissioned the recent run of TV ads) They can be accessed online.

Black men also tend to develop it at a younger age than white men, which is interesting.

Well leeneia, there's been a public health advert on our TV each evening for a while now, urging men to get checked, and it actually said '1 in 4 if you're black'; it was written up on the screen.

=================
I do believe that if health guidelines say he should be checked, then he should man up and get checked.

Senoufou, I have my doubts about that figure of 1 in 4. here's a quote from a reliable looking site: (link later)

"For African-American men, however, the rates [of prostate cancer diagnosis] are much higher, with 158.3 new diagnoses per 100,000 men. In fact, African-American men are twice as likely to die from the disease as white men."

158 divided by 100,000 is .00158. That's about 1.6 percent, not the 25 percent you fear.

I leave it up to you to research how African-Americans may differ from Africans such as your husband.

Exactly McGrath. It's always best to keep up with health checks.

If it were to be found to be enlarged, presumably he'd need a biopsy or scan of some sort. He has absolutely no symptoms though. It's just the prevalence of the disease among men of his race which worries me.

A poor chap in our village was recently found to have prostate cancer which sadly had spread.

Just hope that when the doctor says it's enlarged he or she adds the magic word "benign".

Whatever you do, don't mess around and get all coy about getting checked.

This thread reminds me of one of my New Year resolutions, which is to persuade husband to have a prostate check at the doc's.

Black men have a 1 in 4 chance of getting prostate cancer.

Trouble is, I stupidly told him how they check it, and he isn't terribly keen on the procedure! (Have to say, I wouldn't be either, but monitoring one's health is important)

Jack, if you're still here, I'm glad you explained. I was worried that somewhere a Mudcatter had suffered terrible burns. I'm glad it was just an Autocorrect error, and that you let us know.

You're not alone. I read of a parent who texted the kids "We're going to Disneyland," but the message came out as "We're going to divorce." There was hell to pay.

Ae fond Piss, and then we sever;
Ae fareweel, alas, for ever!
Deep in heart-wrung tears I'll pledge thee,
Warring sighs and groans I'll wage thee.
Who shall say that Fortune grieves him,
While the star of hope she leaves him?
Me, nae cheerful tinkle lights me;
Dark despair around benights me.

...further to the point of laughing off serious subjects..

immediately after typing here I phoned my mum to check up on her
..and left her giggling uncontrollably about her dementia and increasing incontinence...
It brightens up her day [her words..]

she needs at least 2 belly laughs every 24 hours - providing that tonic is my job...

Laughing back at despair keeps us alive...

Keep this thread down here, but start a new one in music... simple innit...

Blokes over a certain age need to have a good laff about the all too serious topic of finger and bumhole examinations...

I was talking to my old mum about prostrate examinations and what it entails,
and her responses was "oh.. well i've not had one of those yet..."

ah bless her...

Keberoxu got it right. I looked at the preview and my message seemed fine so I didn't check that it had gone wrong. I was asking what Burns pieces might be fitting.

Bugger it. Please delete this whole thread. I'm not going to try again.

    Hi, Jack - we usually don't delete threads once other people have posted to them. The thread belongs to the originator only until the first response is posted. Then it belongs to the community.

I think Mr Campin is alluding to the idea that Burns may have been affected by prostate problems at the end of his life.
There are some theories on this but only those of Mr Campin's disposition would find them interesting or entertaining.

I'm not sure want to talk about prostates, and I especially don't want to talk about prostate examinations....
