Subject: Song searching From: GUEST Date: 27 Feb 19 - 11:03 AM Does anyone remember a song and I think an LP called the Beauty of Kashmir? If so who sung it? |

Subject: RE: Song searching From: GUEST,Peter Date: 27 Feb 19 - 12:05 PM also at https://mainlynorfolk.info/steeleye.span/songs/cadgwithanthem.html Better known as "The Robbers Retreat" or "The Cadgwith Anthem". A great chorus but it seems to have fallen out of favour at the clubs that I frequent. (This being Mudcat somebody will now tell me that I am wrong about it falling out of favour because Old Fred, 200 miles away from me, insists on singing it every Friday night) |
Subject: RE: Song searching - "Beauty of Kashmir?" From: Tattie Bogle Date: 27 Feb 19 - 06:44 PM I seem to remember a hugely long thread about this some years back, with lots of esoteric debate about what it all means, with no conclusive results. When I have seen it done it recent times it has been taken much less than seriously and totally "hammed up" by the singers, with lots of melodramatic actions and high descant in the chorus, much to everyone's amusement, if not entirely faithful to the song! |
Subject: RE: Song searching - "Beauty of Kashmir?" From: Jim Dixon Date: 27 Feb 19 - 06:59 PM Isn't it supposed to be Cashmere rather than Kashmir? |
Subject: RE: Song searching - 'Beauty of Kashmir?' From: Joe Offer Date: 28 Feb 19 - 12:48 AM So, is the tune the same as "Beautiful Brown Eyes" - or is the Digital Tradition misleading me? It's certainly not the tune used by Steeleye Span: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMBpPYA8ebY -Joe- |

Subject: RE: Song searching - 'Beauty of Kashmir?' From: Jeri Date: 28 Feb 19 - 09:25 AM That's not the tune, Joe. It should be BEAUKSHM, but that one seems to have disappeared. Kashmir. It's a flower that comes from there. That's speculation, but I don't see how it could be anything else. See Cadgwith Anthem - what's that flower? |
Subject: RE: Song searching - 'Beauty of Kashmir?' From: Ged Fox Date: 28 Feb 19 - 01:19 PM An approximation to the earliest known printed version - Robbers' Retreat (Naval Song Book version) |
Subject: RE: Song searching - 'Beauty of Kashmir?' From: Mick Pearce (MCP) Date: 28 Feb 19 - 04:01 PM Joe - I've put up the abc for a version of the usual tune heard these days in the Origins: Cadgwith Anthem thread. Mick |
