one minute he is doing well, when I log in the following day I find this thread & a line popped up from the following song that Tom Lewis brought to Sydney a few years ago.

when I find Amos's CD, hidden somewhere near me, I'll play it again.

Such a terrible shock. I'm so saddened by this awful - and unexpected - news since it seemed, from my last communication with Daly, that Amos had recovered from his fall beautifully. A brilliant and talented man taken from us too soon.

Amos was an exceptional man. He will be truly missed by all who follow and participate in Mudcat.

In my copy of "Beyond the Cascade" Amos enclosed a note. It reads

16 July 2013

Dear Michael:

Thank you so much for that nicely written letter. You did a good job.

Here is the Book you requested. Please be very sure to look up all the words as you go along. It will make you even smarter.

Have no fear or regrets of oversharing your experience and and regard for Amos. This thread is much like a wake. The last couple wakes I attended were filled with hearing stories of other interests, family, friends, all beyond my contact with the friend who died. What that sharing gave me was a greater appreciation of one I already valued, to understand that there were lives that had much bigger holes in them than mine, and to realize I had been right in cherishing our friendship in such a broad, exciting life. And those folks I knew well and long. Knowing that someone you were barely acquainted with (as me with Amos) was all kinds of wonderful in the lives of others who, in turn, appreciated them, enlarges their memory all around. And that's a good thing. The world right now is so full of awful, that heartfelt expressions of friendship and love are like clean air and pure water, amid the muck.

The proof that Amos had so many good friends is a prod for me to BE a good friend, and work a bit harder to turn acquaintances into friends.

It's too soon, I think, to start it, but we need-- and Amos would love-- a thread about The New Adventures of The Quondam Amos Jessup.

As I've said elsewhere, we were very close at one time. His Cascade book, which I helped edit (not proofread) from its beginnings, was in many ways his own story of life as he believed it.

So a story thread telling his continuing adventures would be right up his alley.

He might even drop in to help write some of it.

Amos and I once fought a genuine duel. He fired a BB gun in the direction of Pocatello, Idaho from San Diego and I went to a shooting range (duels must be done safely or someone could get hurt!) and fired a shot in the direction of San Diego. The range was 729 miles (1,173.21 kilometers). We then closed our quarrel and were friends thereafter. What was it all about? you ask. Well, it had to do with solipsism. We were each correct.

Ah, sad news. We crossed paths now and then in San Diego, and I thought we might sing together when I was in Durham last November, but the timing didn't work out. Wonderful to read such warm remembrances here.

When Amos was born he was almost 3 months premature, and it was 1945. The doctor said, "The baby is dead" but the nurse didn't think so. She gave him artificial respiration, and he started breathing. He lived his first two months in an incubator. Within the next couple of years, our mother had another extreme premie, a girl named Susannah, who lived for only a few weeks, also in an incubator. And not too long after that, in 1949, I was born. I think I was the most uneventful of our mother's four successful pregnancies. Amos was not quite 4 when I was born, and I looked up to him with nearly worshipful awe until well into my adulthood. That worshipful sense lessened a little as we went through the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune -- but only a little.

The last few days have been the first in my life when Amos is not there for me to look up to It's a strange, challenging adjustment. I'm glad to read this thread, and I'm grateful.

One part of Mudcat that Amos and I shared was the old Song Challenges when Aine was running them. The most fun I've ever had on a computer.

I don't come here often but tonight I felt I had to... A-Mess and I had a special relationship... When I first arrived at the Getaways he and I would venture off to where he could brew us French press coffees... I would call the P-Vine to tell her I arrived safely but rather than tell her myself I would hand the phone to him with no warning and let the two of them figure things out... He came to visit us in Wingate, NC and stayed an extra day just to hang out and played songs night and day frot two days solid only to stop to eat or use the bathroom... A-mess was a pesky kinda lovable musician... Just when ya' thought you might actually have a meaningful conversation about the meaning of life with hin he would be off on another song... It was songs, songs and more songs... I remember having lunch with him in Hillsborough at some cafe and found out what he really did for a living... It was that day that he told me that he was looking at some monsterous sailboat that he had looked into and I told him that if he needed a first mate that I was his man... He said, "We'll talk"... That was the first time I realy had an opportunity to peer into his other life... You know, the one that didn't involve a guitar... I don't know what to say... I am having trouble processing this... I go from denial to, "Oh my God" sometimes in a matter of minutes... What really bugs me is that we did something at the Getaway and A-Mess was supposed to play lead guitar and he was all over the place and we were walking back to the PEACE CABIN and I said, "Man, you kinda sucked in there" and he said "So did you" and so we had a good laugh I remember putting my arm around him and he me as we walked back to PEACE CABIN telling each other how bad we had just sucked... It doesn't get any better than that... A-Mess, old buddy, you might have done this your your way but you sho' nuff did it too early... Love ya', brother... Gonna miss you terribly...

We were so very sorry to hear of Amos passing while we were away last week.

We met at the Getaway (oh, which year was that?) and enjoyed listening to him an everyone playing late night and all weekend too. Always hoped to get over the pond & meet Catters and Friends again.

I followed his journey through his illness and sent a card to him just a few weeks ago. Candle lit in Remembrance, condolences to Family and Friends.

RIP Amos, you will be remembered by so many x

But I wanted to tell you this, Bill.

We had a bit of a wake at our local the day after Amos died. The bartender (who also knew Amos) came by with armloads of whiskey glasses for a toast. It was a busy afternoon. He yelled, "coming in HOT!" I thought, and said, I'll bet that's what Amos said when his prodigious spirit took leave of his talented brain and body : )
