There's a wonderful song recorded by a Scottisdh Group called Ossian, not to be confused with the Irish Osin. I think it's called Stranger To Me, and it's all about the fact that when her man's back is turned, she doesn't care about him, bawdy? Just a bit, hope you find it. The widow and the devil is superbly dirty, what about The Jolly Beggarman( a la Planxty) it's only storytelling after all, no matter the sex and it has groovy harmonies for the chorus and The Wise Maid to follow is a crackin tune. Good Luck

If you're looking for bawdy, look no further than the songs of the Merry Muses by Robert Burns. Of course, if the audience isn't Scottish, you may have to alter the words a bit to be understood. However, nobody wrote bawdy like good auld Rabbie.

Not a folk song as such, but I have been trying to learn "Pirate Jenny" from the Threepenny Opera for ages. It's a brilliant song, but, like "Wife of the Soldier" a bit tricky to accompany. I think it would be just the job!! Hwyl, Bron.
Oh, if you do "Sally free and Easy". Try starting a capella, and get the instruments to come in one by one, verse by verse, till everyone's in by the last verse, then all come to a dead stop after "Hope she dies of shame" Well, that's how we do it. Bron.

I should have thought of these before!

Fire Down Below

Captain Captain

Both are true shanties and trad (I think) and both a little bawdy to the right mind.

WHAT!? Nobody mentioned "The Mermaid"? It has a jolly chorus and funny lyrics! "Below, below, beloooooow!" The Clancy Brothers do an superb version of this on their Greatest Hits. Oh yes, how could I forget "The Spree"? Impress people by how fast you can sing it! Great fun!

Timbrel, I just thought of one The Spinners (Liverpool Folk Group) did years ago---The Fireship about a young lady of the night (wharf rat) should fit the bawdy song group nicely. The last verse if memory serves me well should be.

Come all you saucy sailor lads who sail the seven seas
Likewise you jolly apprentice boys this warning take from me.
Steer clear of lofty fireships less all your moneys spent.
For one burned all my money up and left me broke and bent.
For she'd a dark and rolling eye and her hair hung down in ring-a-lets.
She was a nice girl a decent girl but one of the rakish kind.

(Story of me life mates) Yours, Aye. Dave

If you want some good shanties, you gotta pick up the Wild & Wasteful Ocean by Clancy, O'Connell, and Clancy. You can buy it at clancymusic.com

For good drinking tunes I would reccomend some early Clancy Brothers & Dubliners stuff. If you want serious Irish music I would reccomend Christy Moore overall.

I second "Me husband's got no courage in him," Louie Killen has recorded it. Also "Wee pot stove," if you can find it. (Contemporary sailing song -- big in Seattle.)

Roberts & Barrand recorded "Three drunken Maidens" and a lotta other stuff listed above.

This may be too late but I only just found this thread. Our sea chanty group, Roll & Go, consisits of four men and three women. We each take turns leading songs in concert making sure everyone gets a chance. The women have no problem singing any of the songs. The lead voice has complete control over the songs she/he chooses to do.

No one should miss out on the opportunity to sing with women in this genre. They add such a wonderful dimension to the music they should never feel left out.

For a good auditory workshop of females leading sea chanteys, try the recordings of Heather Wood (She'll be at Old Songs this year. Timbrel, I'm guessing that if you've been on the Clearwater, this won't be too far away for you.), Helen Schneyer, or Frankie Armstrong. Not all stuff in the high soprano range, either.

I too have a big loud voice and I LOVE to sing shanteys. So there. (Mister's uncle is an old Navy guy and he has never objected.) Away Rio is one of my favorites, as well as the Noah's Ark Shanty. We also do Shawnee Town but that's more of a riverboatman's song.

Some favorite sorta bawdy songs: The Brisk Young Butcher, the Two Magicians, Navvy Boots. Mister seems to like the bawdy songs more than I do. Guess that's a man thing...
