Subject: Folk Singarounds/Sessions - Keswick area
From: MoorleyMan

Will be in Keswick for a few days from March 29th.
Any ideas please??

Have already searched the Forum and googled pretty extensively, but there's a real dearth of current information for sure.

The site https://westcumbriafolkmusic.weebly.com/ is the most informative, and appears to be up to date. But it doesn't differentiate between musician-only sessions and singer-friendly ones or singarounds - and no contact details are supplied to enable checking.

Yes, there was once a similarly titled Mudcat thread back in 2004, but inevitably its details and links are now all likely to be defunct.

I recall there was once a weekly folk club in Cockermouth, but that also seems to have disappeared without trace.

Any Catters with good local knowledge??

Hi MoorleyMan, sorry, no local knowledge.
But I put a few links on a thread last year
thread.cfm?threadid=82919#3907184
I think the westcumbriafolkmusic you've already found might have been the best of them though.

I notice Sticklebarn in the Langdale Valley has occasional gigs
https://m.facebook.com/NTSticklebarn/?sk=events

The thread here describes first Wednesdays in cockermouth as 'folk' so I wonder if that's what remains of the weekly club :(

Thanks for all that, Freddy. I appreciate your posting.
I'd found your thread from last year by chance, just after I posted, and the calendar page link was at least an honest attempt to get things together.
Many thanks again.

There's a music and song session at the Dockray Hall, Great Dockray, in Penrith on Monday 1st April, 8.30pm to 11.00pm. On Facebook, there's a Folk Music Cumbria page with more local info.

I have a Mr Red's RoW page (rest of World)

and on it there seems to be two listing sites for the area generally.

Cumbria Folk Music (lists Twa Dogs alt Sunday)

Folk & Roots North West

Best of luck

I also found a calendar page quite by chance from a link on another old thread that i can't re-locate (History, bah!).
That also appears to be fairly up to date, and some entries have more info than others...
https://calendar.google.com/calendar/embed?src=sik6psimmc2igjsta4goj1pbds@group.calendar.google.com&ctz=Europe/London&pli=1 (sorry, never could manage blue clicky!)

The Cockermouth first-Wednesday info seems to contradict - it's either @ The Bush or The Swan - surmising the former has replaced the latter but can anyone there confirm?

yes, the cockermouth folk is at the swan on first wednesday of the month for tunes only and there is another night for tunes/songs but i'm not sure which. check with the swan (kirkgate, cockermouth) . if the music isn't on (or if it is - it can get a bit relentless) you can often join us for a game of cards/scrabble. and drink some great beer in the best pub in the area.
a couple of years ago the young 'uns did an hour in here after their gig at the local arts centre but i can't promise that will be on during your visit

Well there is plenty, not necessarily Folk. Best choose the "week" format and advance one for Sunday etc. (I can't see how to default it to week - I am sure it is in the src=sik6psimmc2igjsta4goj1pbds@group.calendar.google.com somehow. And Goggle aren't much help in tracing where it comes from.)

But lookyehere https://www.facebook.com/groups/559334634165080/ (Folk Music Cumbria) and first post for March 30th in Ulpha which I deduce is a venue in/near Broughton in Furness (the hottest ticket in the Lake Distric?)

I'll get my coat.........

Thanks all for the help.

Re Cockermouth - sorry but tunes-only is no good for me, I did specify singer-friendly in my original post! I'll phone the Swan as you suggest.

Re Ulpha - and Ulverston - both look to be nice places, but a very very long drive round from Keswick! Oh, and they're concerts only - not sings.

Oh well - back to the old dog & bone then!

Have tried ringing the Bush at Cockermouth re their 1st-Wed "folk song and music" session, but the staff "know nothing" and "can only assume it still runs" but couldn't suggest any way i find out!

No luck with the Swan either re which night is their "different night" tunes-and-songs session referred to by Peteaberdeen above.
The pub's website contradicts Pete, as it says Tunes on second-Wednesday and "traditional folk session" on Third-Wednesday, but I couldn't get a reply when phoning the number listed on that website to check...

Thanks Pete, great help.

A bit like one of those Groucho Marx routines tho' - the party of the first part... probably I'm gettin' mixed up because next Wednesday is the first Wednesday but also the 3rd (ie 3rd April, in literal date terms!). Careful reading of your post draws that distinction...

A friend phoned someone on a 01900- number last night (don't know who) and was told next Wed (date 3rd but 1st Wed!) is definitely songs & tunes at the Bush, so that'll suit me fine.

I think I have some decent options to choose from now, so maybe see you there?

I was a borrowed child during the 60's and I'm still wondering if any of you know me ... I was "borrowed" and then returned after a music festival ... put on a train's boxcar with an orange quilt ... and sent to De Funiak Springs, Florida ... jogging any memories here??? Because mine are few and far between ... and trying to get my act together ... folk music and trains are all I remember ... Maybe someone named "Sunflower"? I am not looking for convicitions here ... just trying to connect my memories (and they are good) ... and trying to prove I am not seriously as crazy I think I am.

... at the Bush, ...
& note there is a Bush in Cockermouth and a Bush in Tallentire ... according to googlemaps. !

For the sake of an extra two or three keystrokes, if I remember, which I don't always, I try to write longhand the first \ second \ ... but if relying on memory and speech that's a tricky one!

My apologies to anyone who follows my post of 25th March and turns up at Dockray Hall, Penrith tonight, 1st April expecting a session. We just heard the pub is closed "until further notice" - without warning to us. I think we might be seeking another venue.

Well, I'm back from my Keswick trip, and I can report three worthwhile gatherings.
The best of them was the Bush at Cockermouth on Wednesday, which was a fine evening indeed, very welcoming and stacked with quality and variety (and no messing about or excessive tuning-up!). But you should've introduced yourself, Peteaberdeen - it would've been good to meet you and thank you for your contributions to this thread by buying you a pint! Maybe next time?

Tuesday evening at the Mortal Man in Troutbeck was really nice if a touch under-supported, and Sunday afternoon at the Twa Dogs in Keswick itself ditto with a surprisingly small turnout, but both good craic nevertheless and again very welcoming.

I didn't make it to the Open Mic on Monday at the Belgian Beer Bar in Keswick, as I couldn't find a parking space and it was raining too hard, didn't fancy a long walk so gave up!

But thanks one and all for your suggestions and help.

Cheers,
MM
