Dear Jim McLean,

Apologies for trying to get a hold of you this way, but I'm currently writing a book on music, resistance, and Irish republicanism and hoping to reproduce the lyrics from "The Patriot Game" for a textual analysis.

According to the records I can find online, the copyright for the original ( EU0000844797) was renewed on 20/07/1992. Dominic's wife Josephine is listed as the copyright holder, but I have no idea how to contact her with a request to reproduce the song.

Would you have any way of putting me in touch?

Why are you asking Jim? It isn't his song.

I doubt you need to ask anyone's permission for an academic study of it.

Written by Dominic Behan in 1957 and as Jack says, I wouldn't think permission is required. Why do think I could help? I know I had a conversation with Dylan over this song and correspondence in the Guardian at the time.

Dominic Behan claimed the authorship of patriot Game - not a guarantee that he wrote it but I think in this case, he probably did
An e-mail or better still, phone call to the Irish Traditional Music
Archive in Dublin might be helpful - details on line
If your interests stretches back that far, our Clare collection includes a number of songs dating back to the Land Wars (particularly the cattle-rustling protests)and a number of locally made songs on the Irish war of Independence (Clare County Library Carroll Mackenzie Collection; in my opinion, the local songs are far more Representative of the vents than the Patriotic creations, such as 'Patriot Game.
I assume you are aware of Terry Moylan's magnificent doorstep of a collection , 'The Indignant Muse' - everything you wanted to know about the Irish fight for independence but were afraid to ask

Jack, I was asking Jim (McLean) about this because he said he'd contacted Dominic's wife Josephine in an earlier (2005) post. In order to reproduce the song in my book, my publisher has asked for permission from the copyright holder, who is listed as Josephine.

Jim (McLean), many thanks for reaching out via email! I've just replied with a bit more detail...

Jim (Carroll), I only just realised that we've met before, at a folksong conference in Limerick back in July 2016! Mary McLaughlin and I were supposed to drive down from Limerick to see you again in the summer of 2017, where I'd hoped to check out your collection. It was a pity that trip didn't go ahead, but I hope to make it down there one of these days. The main focus of my book is from the mid-twentieth century to the present. As for Moylan's 'The Indignant Muse', I've read it (as well as his earlier book 'The Age of Revolution in the Irish Song Tradition 1776 to 1815') and thoroughly enjoyed both. I hope life is treating you well and that our paths cross again!

I remember the encounter well and the conference which was stunned by the Brexit decision
We are still in contact with Mary and the team there
We've donated our collection and bequeathed our library to Limerick - a wonderful set-up
Feel free to use anything that interest you and to call any time
Clare is rich in songs and stories of the political struggles - as an old singer told us, "In those days, if a man farted in church, somebody made a song about it"

I don't know if you are aware, but following the Troubles Nicholas Carolan made sorties into the six counties gathering locally issued songs on the events that had just passed
Tom Munnely once told us of a cassette that was issued the name of which made his eyes water - 'The Pope's a Darkie"
I don't know if they weer ever made publicly available

Think you will need to contact the Archive Stephen - it was explained to me that they were sold from under the counter somewhere in The North
I'm not even sure they are accessible to the public
