Subject: BS: Word games From: Raggytash Date: 01 May 19 - 04:16 PM I play a lot of word games on my tablet and thinking recently I came across a four letter word, 3 consonants and one vowel whereby changing the vowel alone I found five quite different words. I later thought of another, but I'm damned if I can recall it!! So the challenge. By changing JUST the vowel in a word how many can be found that have A, E, I, O and U to give another word. |

Subject: RE: BS: Word games From: Jon Freeman Date: 01 May 19 - 05:20 PM Cill is in Chambers as a (building) variant of sill. But what dictionary should you use and should you stick to words you know? Coll is given there as obsolete for to hug. The mountain one is spelt col. |
Subject: RE: BS: Word games From: DMcG Date: 01 May 19 - 05:22 PM I thought of chill. Dall is a kind of sheep, so if that is allowed d*ll works. P*ll also works with the archaic pell. |

Subject: RE: BS: Word games From: Mr Red Date: 01 May 19 - 05:29 PM I'm not too hopeful regarding cill. try the ledge on the upstream side of a lock that holds the wooden block that the lockgate presses against to complete the water-tightness. Extends forward of the lockgates for mechanical strength, and you will see a notice painted on the lock wall "stay forward of cill" Failure to do so would be cilly............... |

Subject: RE: BS: Word games From: Raggytash Date: 02 May 19 - 02:53 PM Stanron, Gelly is a corruption of Gelegnite and I don't tink fits the criteria. Nice try but no rosette. I will look at Steve's later but they seem tenuous to say the least, however he seem to have overlooked the fact I said at least four letters and what the hell 'pess' I don't know!! 'Tink' ...... Hmmmmmmmm I'm spending a lot of time in Ireland !!!!!! |

Subject: RE: BS: Word games From: Jon Freeman Date: 02 May 19 - 06:07 PM For the fun of it, I've just had a go at running through a word list (British and American spellings, size 70) downloaded from Aspell. I've only tried 4 and 5 letter words and only chosen what I'd think are the most likely vowel positions. This is what I got.
