Well done, sir!

It's been a good month for sightings. Sadly, the weather has got in the way big time in the SW. We haven't had a clear night since I first posted.

I did take some pics but I don't have any sophisticated gear (and I can't put them up anywhere as I don't do any social media). The only other display I saw was in 2009 and I got some quite good shots then.

Plenty on the web about last night's display which was seen right across Northern Europe and further south than usual. You need to be looking at a clear northern horizon at least an hour after sunset. They are visible only in midsummer. Thankfully the moon isn't interfering at the moment. Once you've seen them you can't mistake them for cirrus clouds. They are silvery-blue streaks with waves and ripples with a ghostly luminosity. I'll be out there again tonight! Rare!

Your lucky to have a sight of these rare clouds. As a former meteorologist (1960,s) I only saw them once from northern Scotland. Was it too dark to take any photos?

It was a classic show, not fading until well after midnight. Pollution reaching the mesosphere could be involved. Another suggestion is meteor debris. It's a mystery as to how the water gets up there.

You sure it wasn't from a rocket launch?

We have noctilucent clouds. Right there on the northern horizon. I can't waste time here. I'm going outside again...
