Subject: Judd Proctor From: Big Al Whittle Date: 28 Jun 19 - 12:53 PM I remember loving this guitarists work on the radio when I was a kid. Does anyone know anything about him? Theres not even a Wikipaedia article about him |
Subject: RE: Judd Proctor From: Joe Offer Date: 28 Jun 19 - 01:01 PM Is he still alive? Discogs.com says he was born in 1933 in Doncaster. imdb has quite a bit about him. There's a bit about him at https://gypsyjazzuk.wordpress.com/36-2/judd-procter/. Sounds like an interesting guy. -Joe- Here's a recording called "The Turk" by Proctor. We all know this tune, but I sure can't come up with its name. What is the actual name of this tune, and where does it come from?: [answer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=quxTnEEETbo] |
Subject: RE: Judd Proctor From: Backwoodsman Date: 28 Jun 19 - 03:35 PM Google ‘Judd Proctor guitarist’. There’s tons of stuff about him - played in his own band as well as Ray Ellington’s Quartet and other groups. He was born in Doncaster (a few miles up the road from me) in 1933 and was a banjoist as well as a Gypsy-Jazz guitarist. Judd Proctor - ‘The Turk’ (1962) |
Subject: RE: Judd Proctor From: Backwoodsman Date: 28 Jun 19 - 03:36 PM Sorry Joe,didn’t realise you’d already linked to ‘The Turk’! |
Subject: RE: Judd Proctor From: Rusty Dobro Date: 29 Jun 19 - 03:56 AM He should be better known - prolific session guitarist, including 'Silver Threads and Golden Needles' by the Springfields. |
Subject: RE: Judd Proctor From: GUEST,Henry Piper (of Ottery) Date: 29 Jun 19 - 04:45 AM "The Turk" is, I believe Rondo A'La Turque by Mozart. Judd proctor was well known in the jazz world, as well as a very active session guitarist. His jazz work encompassed guitar and banjo in traditional and mainstream genres, as well asspecialising in "Gypsy" jazz. |
Subject: RE: Judd Proctor From: Bonzo3legs Date: 29 Jun 19 - 05:41 AM He was one of the better UK guitarists of the early 60s along with Joe Moretti - both had flying fingers!!! |
Subject: RE: Judd Proctor From: Bonzo3legs Date: 29 Jun 19 - 07:58 AM Other forgotten guitarists from that era - all of Sutch's guitarists, in particular Geoff Mew and Bernie Watson - I don't think Ritchie Blackmore has been forgotten!!!, and Jerry Wilcock of The Fentones who was easily as good as Hank Marvin at the time. What about Bert Weedon? Personally I didn't like his style of playing, but he was very nimble fingered indeed at the time! |
Subject: RE: Judd Proctor From: GUEST,Henry Piper (of Ottery) Date: 29 Jun 19 - 10:31 AM Bert Weedon also started his musical Life in Jazz bands, most noticeably along with Geoff Love, (trombone) and Norrie Paramor (piano) in an early incarnation of Harry Golds pieces of eight. It was this band that in the early forties was forbidden by the B.B.C to feature (in a RADIO broadcast!!) a romantic song duet between Geoff Love, who was black, and the bands white girl vocalist. |
Subject: RE: Judd Proctor From: fat B****rd Date: 29 Jun 19 - 02:14 PM The late Joe Moretti played the groundbreaking lead on "Shakin' All Over" |
Subject: RE: Judd Proctor From: GUEST,Treacle Bolly Date: 29 Jun 19 - 03:26 PM It's Mozart's Rondo alla Turc or something spelled very similar(hence The Turk). I think Proctor was the guitarist on the Last of the DSummer Wine theme |
Subject: RE: Judd Proctor From: Big Al Whittle Date: 29 Jun 19 - 03:37 PM I remember an article in Beat Instrumental about Vic Flick. He said his favourite guitar break that he did was Craig Douglas's cover of Oh Lonesome Me! |
Subject: RE: Judd Proctor From: GUEST,Henry Piper (of Ottery) Date: 29 Jun 19 - 03:37 PM Treacle ! I refer you to my posting 5 posts up when I identified the tune !! |
Subject: RE: Judd Proctor From: Bonzo3legs Date: 29 Jun 19 - 04:37 PM fat B****rd - Joe Moretti also played on Hall of the Mountain King when in Nero & the Gladiators, a band I missed by one week in 1962 although Lord Sutch was on!!! |
Subject: RE: Judd Proctor From: GUEST,Alan Date: 04 Jun 21 - 12:28 PM Judd died in April. |
Subject: RE: Judd Proctor (1932-2021?) From: Bonzo3legs Date: 05 Jun 21 - 06:40 AM From the sounds of Judd's singles, he was a jazz guitarist and although nimble fingered, suffered from Bert Weedonitis when playing for pop records. |
Subject: RE: Judd Proctor (1932-2021?) From: GUEST,Ulitzer95 Date: 13 Aug 21 - 07:57 AM Hi, A few corrections to the above. Judd Proctor was born as Judd PROCTER (Proctor was adopted by him after a misspelling on a Parlophone single release). He was born 2nd Jan 1931, as the birth records confirm. NOT 1930, 1932 or 1933 as erroneously used all over the web. He died on 21st Aug 2021, aged 89 as his Probate confirms here: https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/Wills?Surname=procter&SurnameGrants=procter&YearOfDeath=2020&YearOfDeathGrants=2020&IsGrantSearch=True&IsCalendarSearch=False&page=3#wills |

Subject: RE: Judd Proctor (1932-2021?) From: Felipa Date: 13 Aug 21 - 11:44 AM IF Justin died on 21 Aug it wasn't in 2021 |
Subject: RE: Judd Proctor (1932-2021?) From: GUEST,keberoxu Date: 13 Aug 21 - 01:03 PM And who is Justin ? |
Subject: RE: Judd Proctor (1932-2021?) From: keberoxu Date: 13 Aug 21 - 01:14 PM Guest poster Ulitzer95 is on to something, although their post has some contradictions in it. I cannot get to a single Judd Procter page at the website cited in the post. I did get to the page Ulitzer95 had in mind, with the identical URL. And there I found a list of Procters, ten in all, of whom Judd Procter is the fourth. Here's some other general info from that URL page regarding Judd Procter -- yes, that IS the spelling, Procter, not Proctor. Date of death 21 August 2020 Date of probate December 2020 Probate number 1604311962921614 |
Subject: RE: Judd Proctor (1932-2021?) From: keberoxu Date: 13 Aug 21 - 01:21 PM Big Al Whittle, with all due respect, there IS an "everybodywiki" page, and here, if I can get it right, is the link, which gives Proctor's birth year as 1930 and says that he started out playing -- brace yourselves -- "plectrum BANJO". |
