Subject: Obit: Diahann Carroll 1935 - 2019 From: keberoxu Date: 04 Oct 19 - 03:41 PM "The sweetest sounds I'll ever hear Are still inside my head The kindest words I'll ever know Are waiting to be said The most entrancing sight of all Is yet for me to see And the dearest love in all the world Is waiting somewhere for me" words and music by Richard Rodgers This wistful song has long been attached to the Rodgers-and-Hammerstein Cinderella musical, but it was written later, and did not belong in Cinderella. Richard Rodgers wrote the song for No Strings, the first stage piece he wrote after his lyricist Oscar Hammerstein III had died. And the whole musical, including this song, was a vehicle for Diahann Carroll. Whether on Broadway, in film Claudine), or on television, Diahann Carroll made show-biz history. Rest in peace. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Diahann Carroll (1935-2019) From: Stilly River Sage Date: 05 Oct 19 - 09:17 AM I do remember Julia and I think we watched it at our house. It was a rational program that represented a working single mother, a nurse, and her son. At the time I probably didn't catch the subtle parts of it, it was simply a family show. Carroll was the long time companion of David Frost, but I don't think they married, though by then they could have. What a stupid thing, laws that prohibited marriages if both weren't the same skin color. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Diahann Carroll (1935-2019) From: Mark Ross Date: 05 Oct 19 - 09:29 AM Saw her on Broadway in the'60's with Alan Alda in THE OWL AND THE PUSSYCAT. She played a prostitute, he was her neighbor, a neurotic writer. Lovely comedy,, but when it was transferred to a movie, the studio gave her part to Barbra Streisand. I guess they were nervous as how an interracial romance would hurt their box office receipts. Mark Ross |

Subject: RE: Obit: Diahann Carroll (1935-2019) From: Bat Goddess Date: 07 Oct 19 - 07:04 PM The obits seem to neglect mentioning she played June, Neal's landlady, in the TV series "White Collar" which I, at the behest of my sister, binge watched on DVD. Linn |
