Subject: BS: American women are officially UNEQUAL From: Donuel Date: 09 Jan 20 - 05:43 PM ERA expires |
Subject: RE: BS: American women are officially UNEQUAL From: Stilly River Sage Date: 09 Jan 20 - 08:41 PM This [Trump] Justice Department is unequipped to make such a pronouncement. I listened to a story about the prospective Virginia passage of the ERA - there will be court cases. It may start over again. But it isn't dead. |
Subject: RE: BS: American women are officially UNEQUAL From: Donuel Date: 09 Jan 20 - 09:17 PM so theres hope? It is common knowledge that women are more equal anyway. |
Subject: RE: BS: American women are officially UNEQUAL From: Mrrzy Date: 10 Jan 20 - 06:48 AM This place has always been more sexist than racist, and that is saying a LOT. |
Subject: RE: BS: American women are officially UNEQUAL From: Backwoodsman Date: 10 Jan 20 - 06:58 AM This place?? |

Subject: RE: BS: American women are officially UNEQUAL From: Backwoodsman Date: 10 Jan 20 - 08:47 AM Ah. I though ‘this place’ referred to Mudcat. |
Subject: RE: BS: American women are officially UNEQUAL From: Mrrzy Date: 10 Jan 20 - 12:14 PM No no Mrrica so sorry! Not my darlin' 'Cat! |
Subject: RE: BS: American women are officially UNEQUAL From: Backwoodsman Date: 10 Jan 20 - 12:30 PM LOL! Dat’s a relief! ;-) |
Subject: RE: BS: American women are officially UNEQUAL From: Joe Offer Date: 10 Jan 20 - 02:06 PM I could see delicious irony in getting the ERA enacted during the Trump Administration (still hoping, of course, that there will be no second term). -Joe- |
Subject: RE: BS: American women are officially UNEQUAL From: Donuel Date: 10 Jan 20 - 04:35 PM There are several dormant ammendments that don't have a deadline that will surprise you. Trumps Judicial dept says "Nope its deadline killed it." Its not up to them. Congress or the Supreme Court decides. |
Subject: RE: BS: American women are officially UNEQUAL From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 11 Jan 20 - 01:10 AM How, when, and why did Congress assume the right to attach a deadline to an amendment proposal? Article V of The Constitution establishes the rules for the amendment process. I don't see anything about a deadline. Article. V. The Congress, whenever two thirds of both Houses shall deem it necessary, shall propose Amendments to this Constitution, or, on the Application of the Legislatures of two thirds of the several States, shall call a Convention for proposing Amendments, which, in either Case, shall be valid to all Intents and Purposes, as Part of this Constitution, when ratified by the Legislatures of three fourths of the several States, or by Conventions in three fourths thereof, as the one or the other Mode of Ratification may be proposed by the Congress; Provided that no Amendment which may be made prior to the Year One thousand eight hundred and eight shall in any Manner affect the first and fourth Clauses in the Ninth Section of the first Article; and that no State, without its Consent, shall be deprived of its equal Suffrage in the Senate. |
Subject: RE: BS: American women are officially UNEQUAL From: Donuel Date: 11 Jan 20 - 09:34 AM BWL we need an advocate such as yourself to argue before the Court. The issues involve the actual reversal of the will of the Convention of several states as well as the possible unconstitutional application of a deadline. |
Subject: RE: BS: American women are officially UNEQUAL From: Mrrzy Date: 11 Jan 20 - 01:59 PM Per my justice dept contact, while amendments can't expire, ratification attempts can or do have deadlines. |
Subject: RE: BS: American women are officially UNEQUAL From: Mr Red Date: 12 Jan 20 - 06:43 AM It is common knowledge that women are more equal anyway. I have heard the term equivalence in some contexts. Pedantically you can't have equality, patently. "Equality" is shorthand for equal opportunities. And thus the argument then revolves around semantics - usually without recognising such. |
Subject: RE: BS: American women are officially UNEQUAL From: keberoxu Date: 12 Jan 20 - 03:32 PM Meanwhile, in Massachusetts, NARAL is mobilizing. A branch of the public library network has posted a notice for an evening panel/talk about "the bad old days before Roe vs. Wade" about what life was like before abortion was legal. |
Subject: RE: BS: American women are officially UNEQUAL From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 12 Jan 20 - 04:27 PM What about discrimination against males? E.g., at he Australian Open tennis, men have to play better for longer to get the same prize money. And saying it's because females look better on court is surely sexist; my poem, from WalkaboutsVerse, "Equal AWARD Pay" |
Subject: RE: BS: American women are officially UNEQUAL From: Donuel Date: 12 Jan 20 - 05:17 PM Bobby Riggs would love it. |
Subject: RE: BS: American women are officially UNEQUAL From: Mossback Date: 12 Jan 20 - 06:53 PM What about discrimination against males? Tragic. Another case of poor, exploited, downtrodden rich white males. Will it never end? |
Subject: RE: BS: American women are officially UNEQUAL From: Mr Red Date: 13 Jan 20 - 04:01 AM Bobby Riggs would love it. If I remember right, an article by/about Billie Jean King, she insisted on their match being 5 sets. Mainly because it stifled the obvious comments, and she knew he would tire sooner than she would. the recent film about the event didn't explain everything. The pig that they came up with at the press conference - I remember her pointing out "the male chauvinist piglet" was running around even as they played. |
Subject: RE: BS: American women are officially UNEQUAL From: Mrrzy Date: 13 Jan 20 - 11:19 AM I am reminded of an old slogan: the woman who strives to be equal to a man lacks ambition. |
Subject: RE: BS: American women are officially UNEQUAL From: Donuel Date: 14 Jan 20 - 06:07 AM For the first time in the US there are more womwn working than men. |
Subject: RE: BS: American women are officially UNEQUAL From: Jack Campin Date: 14 Jan 20 - 08:24 AM The US is the only country in the world where more men than women become rape victims. Think about why. |
Subject: RE: BS: American women are officially UNEQUAL From: Donuel Date: 14 Jan 20 - 08:40 AM knock knock |
Subject: RE: BS: American women are officially UNEQUAL From: Mrrzy Date: 16 Jan 20 - 07:18 AM Hey Virginia passed it yesterday- I am amazed. Donuel, no soliciting! Just kidding. I will be sorry but... Who's there? |
