I came across this today and have installed it. Steinberg Dorico 3 and having only had a cursory look so far it seems to have a nice interface and lots of things on offer if you haven't got something similar.

If you download all the instruments etc it's about 2.5gb

I think it's rather good so far and the guitar tab bit looks good so I will have some fun with this I feel

As usual with stuff like this you have to pay for the full pro version if you want to export your work in an editable form that will outlive the program. No thanks.

I was thinking about posting this here when I got the email last week,
but then thought why be bothered,
if it gets the usual petty dismissals..

It's a project involving ex Sibelius developers.
So no sensible mudcatter will have doubts or even fears about trying it.

However, it needs a new powerful computer to run on...

There is a page on the Steinberg site comparing the available functions of this free version
to the fuller paid versions...

Nick - cheers mate.. it's your turn to try to convince the ungrateful old gits..

It looks interesting but will it work on Linux?

Musescore works great on Linux. Ive been using it for years now and it does everything I want. Still, if Dorico will work on Linux I'd give it a try.

Sibelius has a godawful record for maintaining compatibility.

Losing your work because the product has been discontinued or you can't afford the ransom demand for the latest version is not a risk I'd ever want to take. And it looks like a real risk from what the Steinberg site says.

It exports as musicxml or midi is that no good? That’s as portable as I would need.

I so rarely do things with notes and if I do then use musescore but I just thought I’d mention it in case it was useful to someone. I’m sure that those who already have their favourites are already catered for and not the market for this

But I did as a test import a midi file into Dorito, exported it to musicxml and then imported that file into musescore so it seems portable.

Doritos. Good enough to eat

I encourage anybody who is really committed to music to have a music-editing program. There is a wealth of music on the Internet, and with a program you can download it, edit it, hear it and print it.

I have enjoyed many great playing sessions with pals because of the music I have prepared for the group using music software. For example, many Renaissance dances in F have become more enjoyable in G.

Sometimes I hear a unique piece of music on YouTube and I transcribe it into sheet music. Sometimes it's not easy, but I get hooked. I think it's rather like playing golf - why do we drive ourselves to conquer it?

This Dorico could be a good place to begin. Thanks.
