Subject: RE: BS: Whose thread is it then From: Senoufou Date: 03 Feb 20 - 07:04 AM Oooooh Steve! What a temptation! (I just nearly spilt my tea and had to explain to husband. He says I'm the one needing a good smacked bottom! He's now on the naughty step, and you'll be joining him very soon!) |

Subject: RE: BS: Whose thread is it then From: Senoufou Date: 03 Feb 20 - 03:57 AM Having spent most of my working life in a classroom, I view a domineering thread-grabber as an overly strict teacher. "I am in charge here. I will speak and do most of the talking, you will listen. Do not dare to contradict me! If you are cheeky I'll send you to the Head (Mod) Answer my question and do not digress!" I adore it when a thread meanders and drifts. (I'm one of the chief offenders, I know) It's as if a group of people are in a pub or at a party, having an interesting discussion. Each has their own ideas and interests. A word can trigger a new thought. So natural. I also like it when the contributors have a sense of humour. My husband sometimes looks at me in astonishment as I shriek with laughter at my laptop. Then I explain it and he roars too. Lovely. |
Subject: RE: BS: Whose thread is it then From: Joe Offer Date: 03 Feb 20 - 03:08 AM Well, here's one mod who believes his delete button should be used sparingly. I'd rather close threads that get out of hand and leave the offending messages to prove the need for closure. Others disagree. Joe |
Subject: RE: BS: Whose thread is it then From: punkfolkrocker Date: 03 Feb 20 - 02:40 AM Threads belong to anyone...??? well.. they can often become 'owned' by mods on a deleting spree... |
Subject: RE: BS: Whose thread is it then From: Iains Date: 03 Feb 20 - 02:20 AM There is a natural thread drift as other peripheral topics are introduced and "explored" and there is deliberate thread drift to destroy the thread.(weeds wine and walkabouts spring to mind) If the path the thread is taking does not suit I do not think that gives any individual the right to frustrate it. There is no exterior compulsion to contribute There are a small number who post who seem to think: they set the agenda they control the output that no one should dispute their opinions that sole right to censorship should be with them seek every avenuue to demean opposing views. They know who they are! Their behaviour drives many away. |
Subject: RE: BS: Whose thread is it then From: Backwoodsman Date: 03 Feb 20 - 02:09 AM +1 to all of the above. How often, in real-world conversations, do we reach a point where we look quizzically at others taking part and say, “How did we get on to {insert totally unrelated subject here}? It’s the nature of conversation - perfectly normal. |
Subject: RE: BS: Whose thread is it then From: Joe Offer Date: 03 Feb 20 - 02:00 AM I've always thought that threads were property of the community. No? -Joe- |
Subject: RE: BS: Whose thread is it then From: punkfolkrocker Date: 03 Feb 20 - 12:35 AM Why are people so selfish...!!!??? Always starting threads that don't matter to me. They should remember I am superior to everybody else and want to dominate the debate by shifting all threads asap to my far more important obsessions... ..oops.. just woke up very confused from a nap thinking I was someone else... |
Subject: RE: BS: Whose thread is it then From: Steve Shaw Date: 02 Feb 20 - 05:41 PM As far as I'm concerned, if I launch a thread (not very common), I love to see it take wings and fly wherever it wants to. Thread drift is one of the beautiful things about these forums. |
Subject: RE: BS: Whose thread is it then From: Rapparee Date: 02 Feb 20 - 05:31 PM This is an open forum (within limits) -- a conversation. Conversations go every which way. Of course, if you're discussing the origin of "fa la la" in Maltese folk music, political commentary is not appropriate except as it may pertain. However, folk music/song/lore has a reach so wide you can't be certain what is or is not germane. Nonetheless, we could at least stop insulting each other and try to be civil. |
Subject: BS: Whose thread is it then From: Mo the caller Date: 02 Feb 20 - 05:25 PM I was browsing old threads and came across the sort of comment that crops up now and then. "Please stick to (dances) not (history)" Or "the song I asked about" not "some other song you are reminded of" etc. I always find the twists and turns of the musical conversation one of the valuable things about Mudcat. But am I wrong, does the thread 'belong' to the person who stared it? Though obviously it is frustrating when sensible thread degenerate into name-calling and repetition. |
