Subject: Obit: Obit Joseph Shabalala From: Senoufou Date: 12 Feb 20 - 08:42 AM I just learned that Joseph Shabalala, who founded Ladysmith Black Mambazo, has died, aged 78. He was the lead singer, and his voice was magical, with a tremolo quality. He and Paul Simon performed together in the Graceland concert. I feel so very sad, as he was a delightful character. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Obit Joseph Shabalala From: Jeri Date: 12 Feb 20 - 09:18 AM I first heard Ladysmith Black Mambazo because of Simon, and I instantly loved the music. Shabalala's voice was honey and woodsmoke, joyful and comforting. I'm grateful he was here, and sorry he's gone. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Joseph Shabalala (1941 - 2020) From: Senoufou Date: 12 Feb 20 - 09:40 AM I always used to smile at his (very!) long name Jeri. His singing style is apparently 'isicathamiya', and they all sang in Zulu, with the clicks (love that) Some people here in UK may remember the Heinz beans TV advert with the song 'The Star and the Wise Man' (Inkanyezi Nezazi) Other songs I love include Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes, Homeless, and Rain, Rain, Beautiful Rain. I'm sure Paul Simon is very sad too. He's exactly the same age, and they seemed to have been great friends. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Joseph Shabalala (1941-2020) From: Waddon Pete Date: 18 Feb 20 - 03:33 PM When Ladysmith Black Mambazo came on tour to our part of the world we always went along. The concerts were always marvelous and like others, I have quite a few of their CDs. I have added Joseph to the "In Memoriam" thread. I'm thinking of all his friends and family at this time. RIP |

Have to say, I've watched every single one of their songs/performances on Youtube. I now have tears in my eyes. What IS it about Africa that always pierces my heart? (Husband says, "It was your destiny!") |
