Subject: RE: BS: Wuhan(d)shake or Elbow Bump????? From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 10 Mar 20 - 03:39 PM I am not worried about a toilet paper shortage. Being out of toilet paper is an inconvenience, not an emergency. There are workable substitutes. We humans survived without toilet paper for thousands of years. If you want to be worried about a shortage, worry about a food shortage. So far, nobody's found a workable substitute for food. |
Subject: RE: BS: Wuhan(d)shake or Elbow Bump????? From: Mrrzy Date: 10 Mar 20 - 03:14 PM I will note that nowadays, new people I meet tend to offer their elbow to bump. |

Subject: RE: BS: Wuhan(d)shake or Elbow Bump????? From: punkfolkrocker Date: 10 Mar 20 - 10:51 AM The Bump was quite popular in the disco dancing 1970s... Bound to raise a smile all round if adopted as the formal greeting... |

Subject: RE: BS: Wuhan(d)shake or Elbow Bump????? From: Mr Red Date: 10 Mar 20 - 06:16 AM Are we really going to have that many more pathogens on our knuckles than on our elbows? - less but not even close to zero. Go for handrails or door handles and those knuckles will eventually meet door or wall, particularly on a moving bus. Especially with UK roads, don't get me started on potholes! You try descending stairs in a moving switchback! whereas handshakes often connote a desire to dominate. true but then we handshake to show our swords are enscabarded (?) or at least not in our hands, even in the dark. Well I do, don't you? |
Subject: RE: BS: Wuhan(d)shake or Elbow Bump????? From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 09 Mar 20 - 02:46 PM Personally, I have no problem with doing away with handshakes all together. Half the men I shake hands with want to make the gesture into some sort of strong man contest. I have a glitchy bone in my right hand, courtesy of an old break, and it doesn't like to be squeezed. I'd rather see bowing adopted as a world-wide greeting. Bowing connotes humility, whereas handshakes often connote a desire to dominate. Western society could use a bit more humility and less trying to be dominant. |
Subject: RE: BS: Wuhan(d)shake or Elbow Bump????? From: punkfolkrocker Date: 09 Mar 20 - 12:14 PM Basically, I wouldn't want to shake some folks hands because I'm sure I know what they've just been doing with them... |
Subject: RE: BS: Wuhan(d)shake or Elbow Bump????? From: meself Date: 09 Mar 20 - 12:04 PM How about, "I'd better not: I just brushed my teeth". Or ... well, the possibilities are endless ..... |
Subject: RE: BS: Wuhan(d)shake or Elbow Bump????? From: punkfolkrocker Date: 09 Mar 20 - 11:00 AM I admit in the past I've politely escaped shaking hands with.. "Hi, I'd better not, I've just covered my hands in eczema ointment..."... |
Subject: RE: BS: Wuhan(d)shake or Elbow Bump????? From: meself Date: 09 Mar 20 - 10:35 AM Or you can simply glare and announce: "I don't shake hands" - and maintain your glare till the point is made. Seriously, though: what's wrong with the ol' fist bump? Are we really going to have that many more pathogens on our knuckles than on our elbows? I was at a big funeral yesterday - I gave a couple of pats on clothed arms - hope that was okay ....... |
Subject: RE: BS: Wuhan(d)shake or Elbow Bump????? From: punkfolkrocker Date: 09 Mar 20 - 10:24 AM A blokey nod of the head as I say "alright...???" serves me well enough as a greeting.. "alright mate...???" or "alright bud...???" or similar, may be preferable for more talkative blokes than me... |
Subject: RE: BS: Wuhan(d)shake or Elbow Bump????? From: Charmion Date: 09 Mar 20 - 09:56 AM I wear a cap to keep the sun out of my eyes. It's too floppy to tip neatly, so maybe I should be looking for more rigid headgear. Trouble is, most of it causes me to sweat madly from the scalp. I guess that leaves me with the bow, as a curtsey is just too hilarious in jeans and walking boots. |
Subject: RE: BS: Wuhan(d)shake or Elbow Bump????? From: Rapparee Date: 09 Mar 20 - 09:54 AM I prefer those who wish to greet me to crawl up to me on their bellies, place my booted foot on their head, and call me, "Domine et Deus Meus" whilst begging my mercy and forgiveness. |
Subject: RE: BS: Wuhan(d)shake or Elbow Bump????? From: Mrrzy Date: 09 Mar 20 - 08:47 AM It is called the Dracula sneeze, here. I wear a hat, so it can be tipped. Maybe those, hats I mean, should come back. |
Subject: RE: BS: Wuhan(d)shake or Elbow Bump????? From: Steve Shaw Date: 09 Mar 20 - 06:25 AM And if you keep sneezing into your elbow you may give yourself an ear infection. After all, as kids we were always told that the only thing you should ever put in your ear is your elbow... |
Subject: RE: BS: Wuhan(d)shake or Elbow Bump????? From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 09 Mar 20 - 05:43 AM When I hear 'sneeze into your elbow' I get a mental picture of some sort of impossible contortion. I've always called the place where you're supposed to sneeze the inside of the elbow. The elbow itself is on the other side of your arm. The only way you can plant a sneeze there is to remove your arm entirely. |
Subject: RE: BS: Wuhan(d)shake or Elbow Bump????? From: Mr Red Date: 09 Mar 20 - 03:50 AM Yesterday at Irish Set (think square dancing) we were bumping elbows and Wuhanshaking in that playful half-serious way you do when something is new. But ya can't do Irish Set without holding many someones' hands, so you can't, to be sure. And they put out a variety of anti-bac stuff. No alcohol gel - I have to ask when will supplies get back to normal anyway? It would take Government edicts. |
