Burma Shave
Song by The Everly Brothers

Lyrics
Yonder come-a Willie, he's a-passin' on the hill
He don't dress nice, but tries good to kill
Burma Shave, Burma Shave
Burma Shave, Burma Shave
I bet I've seen a million roads
Of them little red bow-legged signs up & down the line
Come on, come on & get it, get it
Pappy ain't a smart, he ain't but a-quizzin'
But with one thing he knows how to keep 'em all his
Way down yonder by the forks of the branch
The old sow whistles & the little pigs dance
Roses are red, violets are blue
You chase me & I'll catch you
(chorus)

Not the Everly's ..... but a personal family favorite...

GrandPa

Your photo

Came

But your

Dog gone beard

Won't fit

The frame

BURMA SHAVE

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

Great fun...while on the run...in wide open spaces even KOMA had no places.

If you can find it, there is a book, "The verse by the side of the road," with all of the ads in it.

Don't be
like that curb
dead ahead

a mile
a minute
there's no future
in it

Burma Shave

I only saw an actual, real-life Burma Shave sign once in my life. As I recall, it was in rural New Jersey, on the way to Atlantic City. It read:

King Henry the eighth
sure had trouble.
Short-term wives
long-term stubble.

Burma Shave

'Road Dreams' (by Elliot somebody) was a series of 6 30 minute films shown on british tv about 25 years ago. each film is a road trip through the states with accompanying music - john prine, johnny cash, penguin cafe etc and literature from the beat poets. it's all very lyrical and a beautiful reminder of the old hippy camper van days. i'd very highly recommend it - anyway the 'Burma Shave' ads come by frequently and are accompanied by the wee rhymes you are asking for. good luck in finding it. i'm afraid i'm not able to do the link thing but i'm sure it would be popular if anyone could supply it. -ta

(hi joe - any chance of getting that name change i asked you for? - pete glasgow)

I assume most people know that this song was originally written by the inimitable Roger Miller

Her man's whiskers
Never faze her.
He has an
Electric razor.
Why bother with
Burma Shave?

The place to pass
On curves, you know,
Is only at
The beauty show.

Joe_F, I remember it as "Her guy's whiskers ... just don't faze her ..." from Mad magazine. Good remember!

Now I'm remembering another Mad Magazine poem - I don't think it was explicitly a Burma Shave parody, but it was obviously inspired by those roadside ads:

Empty beer cans,
by the road,
are ugly,
many say.
But at night,
reflecting bright,
they safely guide the way.

Here's the book I mentioned earlier. It also seems to have been reissued.
I also recall seeing them long ago in my travels.
