Subject: Lyr Add: Jól van dolga [Hungarian folk song] From: Mrrzy Date: 02 Jul 20 - 03:57 PM Cowboy song I might sing on Monday's Singaround... Rough translation: Work is easy for today's cowboy, No having to cut hay for your horse. Because hay comes already baled, baled baled, Come here, darling, get on my horse in front of me! Sweet mother, who's a cowboy if not me? Who saddles the horse if not me? I saddle my golden-haired horse, horse, horse, I kick the stars off with him. My keen* horse won the battle, His front leg was hit by a sharp bullet. - Get down, cowboy, take off your heavy saddle, saddle, saddle, My poor horse can't bear me anymore! *Google translate insists that this word means Vulture but it's not his vulture horse, not at all the imagery I remember from first learning this song. It's more akin to "like a knife's edge" so I used Keen. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Jol van dolga [Hungarian folk song] From: GUEST,Grishka Date: 02 Jul 20 - 06:20 PM Make sure you get and pronounce the umlauts correctly, e.g. in aranyszőrű. The word you objected to should be késely, but Wiki and other Internet sources write kesely as well - probably a question of dialect. (Be warned that my Hungarian is almost non-existent.) |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Jol van dolga [Hungarian folk song] From: Mrrzy Date: 02 Jul 20 - 06:37 PM Ooh and if a mudelf could make the aforementioned correction too... Mwah! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Jol van dolga [Hungarian folk song] From: GUEST,Grishka Date: 03 Jul 20 - 04:03 AM It is my sad fate that whenever I write something I learned freshly from Mr. Google, it sounds as if I were posing as an expert, in spite of my unequivocal dementi. Some sources represent the last line as Szegény lábam nem bír tovább tégedet!– "My poor leg can no longer carry you", which makes more sense, "straight from the horse's mouth". |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Jol van dolga [Hungarian folk song] From: Mrrzy Date: 03 Jul 20 - 11:20 AM Yes, but that isn't how I learned the song, which is poor horse, not poor foot... Where are you from, Grishka? I learned my Hungarian at the Debreceni Nyári Egyetem. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Jol van dolga [Hungarian folk song] From: GUEST,Grishka Date: 03 Jul 20 - 01:23 PM Mrzzy, if you and others know the song that way, who am I to object in the name of logic? A vulture horse referring to itself as "my horse" - I have no problem with that, if I don't have to sing it! I learned my very little Hungarian from a book, decades ago. The same applies to other languages and sciences in which "Google is my scholarship". I was born and spent my kindergarten time in the former Sovjet Union in a Russian-speaking city; unfortunately my knowledge of that language is pretty much gone. (I remember the Russian "alphabet song" though, which comes handy when looking up words in dictionaries.) You wrote you were from Croatia; I was there once as a tourist and recognized some words, but wisely refrained from trying to speak ... |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Jol van dolga [Hungarian folk song] From: Mrrzy Date: 05 Jul 20 - 08:22 AM No, but mom was from a Hungarian town that was in Yugoslavia, then, and is now in Serbia. I took that last line as being spoken by the cowboy, not the horse, speaking to himself in the 2nd person, the way a person may tell themselves to do something. I hadn't thought of the horse as speaking the prior line, but an observer, but if it's the horse, lábam does make more sense. Thanks! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Jol van dolga [Hungarian folk song] From: GUEST,Grishka Date: 05 Jul 20 - 09:03 AM I see, Mrrzy, so you have been learning your mother's tongue? I agree that the last lines may be taken as the man addressing himself, though I am not really convinced; neither about "kesely". Many lyrics on the Internet are being copy-and-pasted ad infinitum without criticism; my favourite case in question being "Mr. Paganini, we breathlessly await your masterful détente!" - 275 hits at Google, although Ella Fitzgerald and others pronounce "baton" perfectly. A word with a "t" followed by a nasal ... Perhaps we should reveal to casual readers that a Hussar is not really a cowboy, no more than Ottoman soldiers are Native Americans. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Jol van dolga [Hungarian folk song] From: Mrrzy Date: 06 Jul 20 - 02:52 PM Closer to cowboy than anything else American, though, but yeah. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Jol van dolga [Hungarian folk song] From: Mrrzy Date: 08 Jul 20 - 08:44 AM Grishka, how did you get the long umlaut on aranyszoru? I had to paste yours. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Jol van dolga [Hungarian folk song] From: Monique Date: 08 Jul 20 - 11:18 AM Mrrzy, tu as tout ici. Les voyelles à double accent aigu sont sur la page 2, il te suffit de cliquer sur la lettre que tu veux pour avoir les codes. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Jol van dolga [Hungarian folk song] From: GUEST,Grishka Date: 08 Jul 20 - 05:37 PM Note que "les codes" sont Ő ő Ű ű pour Ő ő Ű ű. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Jol van dolga [Hungarian folk song] From: Mrrzy Date: 09 Jul 20 - 09:31 AM Yeah cause what I posted, I mean pasted, both times had the long umlauts, which didn't paste. Monique je vais voir de quoi tu radotes, merci! Thanks for the codes, but how to just type them not in html? Grishka, how many languages have you got? Kösszi szépen to both of you! Puszi puszi! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Jol van dolga [Hungarian folk song] From: Mrrzy Date: 09 Jul 20 - 09:45 AM Hmmm... Érdekes. I had never noticed that only the O and the U ever had the long umlaut. On a normal keyboard I do the Control+ method, which like mom's Olivetti types the accent before the letter. Thus Ctrl+, then c types ç. Ctrl+' then vowel types á é í ó ú Ctrl+: then vowel types ä e ï ö ü Ctrl+[tilde] then n types ñ Ctrl+[accent grave] then vowel types àèìòù But nothing yields ő or ű. Ooh the codes worked! Much obliged! Wait.. Just found this: Press Alt with the appropriate letter. For example, to type ö, ó or o, hold Alt and press O one, two or three times. Stop the mouse over each button to learn its keyboard shortcut. Shift + click a button to insert its upper-case form. Am gonne try that next when just typing, not posting. Will report back! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Jol van dolga [Hungarian folk song] From: GUEST,Grishka Date: 09 Jul 20 - 05:16 PM Mudcat, being from the Good Old Times when Jesus still spoke English, uses a prehistoric treatment of characters from other languages. About a year ago, things got even worse, because until then at least the appearance in the Preview window coincided with the eventual one – now it's only éventuel. Although many Western European characters currently work OK, we best use HTML codes for all non-English characters (– who knows what our Max Spiegel will be up to in the future?!). You now know how that works: typing aranyszőrű yields aranyszőrű, both in the Preview and in the thread (when retrieved from the database). How many languages I have? As many as Google Translate offers. A tiny bit of additional knowledge helps a lot, but does not make me anything near an expert. Often I am at a loss and have to ask native speakers - whose answer is not always reliable either. |
