I've heard from a number of sources that Michael Smith has colon cancer and is in hospice. I pray for the best for him. His songs were wonderful, and he had many friends.

The first time I ever posted to Mudcat was a request to identify a song, which was very quickly identified as The Dutchman by Michael Smith. That was in May 1997.

Chorus: Let us go to the banks of the ocean

So in part I can thank Michael Smith for helping me to be a member of this wonderful Mudcat community.

My best wishes and prayers to Michael.

I was very sorry to hear the news. Michael was a writer of many wonderful songs, thought provoking, happy, sad and poignant. Plenty to read online. He is, of course, in the "In Memoriam" thread. My condolences to all those who know and love him. RIP

There's a Wiki on him: Michael Peter Smith

He was at Old Songs once, and I really looked forward to seeing him. I wasn't disappointed. I loved the songs he wrote. Unpretentious and human.
