Subject: RE: BS: Trump Actions and Effects From: gillymor Date: 25 Oct 22 - 10:19 AM I also take advantage of the squiggly lines but I find it amusing that someone who has claimed that he's teaching the Mudcat populace history can't even get close to the spelling of the name of his subject. I didn't know much of Lindbergh's dalliance with the 3rd Reich until I was well into adulthood, we were pretty much fed the "Lone Eagle" story in school. The man did quietly redeem himself somewhat by flying combat missions as a civilian in the Pacific Theater during the war. |
Subject: RE: BS: Trump Actions and Effects From: Stilly River Sage Date: 25 Oct 22 - 09:54 AM Spelling is overrated. Put a dyslexic at a keyboard and you'll discover all sorts of ways of spelling words that are still understandable. (raises hand - except for the red squiggly line under many of my posts, there'd be a lot more typos coming through.) It's pretty amazing what was known during Lindberg's lifetime that was soon covered over. I never heard about his Nazi leaning views until years after I was out of school. (No squiggly lines under my spelling, though I can cut and paste Lindbergh from another post.) There's a news clip from CNN's Jake Tapper interviewing Bob Woodward in the news this morning discussing pandemic failures and other topics from when Trump was in office, but the day is young yet. Trump manages to do or say something outrageous pretty much every day these days. |

Subject: RE: BS: Trump Actions and Effects From: gillymor Date: 25 Oct 22 - 08:22 AM Charles Lindbergh's (note spelling) anti-Semitism and prewar sympathy for the Nazis has become fairly common knowledge. |
Subject: RE: BS: Trump Actions and Effects From: Donuel Date: 25 Oct 22 - 07:13 AM We are all separated by the history we are taught despite the similarity of our DNA. Joe Offer was taught that Charles Lindburg was a great patriot and American hero. When I introduced him to the history I was taught/learned, I became the 'other' in his mind. Lindburg was wined and dined by Hitler's leadership and offered a free mansion in Germany. Only Lindburg's wife got him to not take the bait but still he admired the Nazis big time. It is obvious that Stilly and I share the same history of which Joe has said, "I do not understand". I should not be surprised Robo knows his history too. |

Subject: RE: BS: Trump Actions and Effects From: robomatic Date: 24 Oct 22 - 02:58 PM In the era of Father Coughlin, I believe his communications and opinion making status was far above that of the late Limbaugh. He was on the air and in the popular and prestigious magazines for a long time. Plus the Catholic church was far stronger and more antisemitic prior to World War 2 and the Second Vatican Council. The US also had strong antidemocratic (populist) leaders such as Huey Long. And Democracy was doing even worse than it is now and racism more endemic. We had popular heroes such as Charles Lindbergh practically rooting for the other side. On the other hand, we did not have the unbelievable speed, spread, and flexibility of the internet and its abuse by everyone from major governments to weird nerds. |

He'll say anything to wring donor money out of his fans. And as far as the subpoena, I'm sure his response will be the uniform "run out the clock" approach. In the E. Jean Carroll testimony that he had to give last week, Invoking the Fifth won't help Trump this time Taxpayers should not foot the bill for Trump’s defending himself against the charge that he defamed his accuser. In response to the journalist E. Jean Carroll’s claim that Donald Trump raped her in the 1990s, the then-president said in January 2019 that “she’s not my type” and that “it never happened.” That denial, of course, suggests that being Trump’s “type” governs whether he would rape that person. Carroll sued Trump for defamation, and he has reached the point where he is out of good options, at least good legal options. The former president has been ordered to sit Wednesday for a deposition (yes, that means under oath) in a defamation case that centers on his denial of Carroll’s allegation. As I’ll explain later, this is one time where pleading the Fifth Amendment won’t help him much. "The legal questions here are whether Trump, as president, was considered to be an “employee” of the government and whether he was acting within the “scope” of that employment when he said that Carroll is not his type and that he didn’t rape her." |

Subject: RE: BS: Trump Actions and Effects From: Donuel Date: 21 Oct 22 - 09:30 PM Throughout the 1930s, Charles E. Coughlin was one of the most influential men in the United States. He was a Catholic priest in the metro Detroit area who became politically active. Foreshadowing modern talk radio and televangelism, Coughlin led radio broadcasts that reached tens of millions listeners. He broadcast religious services with political overtones and expressed antisemitic views. He also voiced pro-Nazi opinions that made him a person of interest for the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in 1942. Today we have General Flynn. Flynn is “one of the most dangerous individuals in America today,” said Ruth Ben-Ghiat, a historian and expert on authoritarianism and fascism who wrote the book “Strongmen: Mussolini to the Present.” “He is spearheading the attack on our democracy, which is coming from many quarters, and he is affiliated with many of these sectors, from the military to Christian nationalism to election denial to extremist groups,” she said. “All of this comes together to present a very live threat. And he’s at the center.” Flynn has, with mixed success, supported like-minded candidates around the country, and has said his immediate goal is to influence this year’s elections. In Sarasota, Florida, where he lives, he has worked in concert with members of the extremist group the Proud Boys to influence local politics. |

Subject: RE: BS: Trump Actions and Effects From: Donuel Date: 18 Oct 22 - 09:46 AM What does Donald Trump think about dictators and autocrats? Well, they’re bad guys, he admits. But that’s not all. Let’s roll the video tape: North Korea: You’ve got to give [Kim Jong-un] credit: how many young guys, he was like 26 or 25 when his father died….he goes in, he takes over, he’s the boss. It’s incredible. He wiped out the uncle, he wiped out this one, that one. This guy doesn’t play games and we can’t play games with him. Russia: I’ll tell you what, if Putin likes me….If he says something positive, that’s a good thing, that’s not a bad thing. And: It is always a great honor to be so nicely complimented by a man so highly respected within his own country and beyond. And: You’re saying he killed people, I haven’t seen that. I don’t know that he has. Have you been able to prove that? And: He’s running his country, and at least he’s a leader. I think our country does plenty of killing also. Iraq: Look at Iraq….[Saddam Hussein] would kill the terrorists immediately…. I’m not saying he was a nice guy, he was a horrible guy, but it was a lot better than it is right now. China: When the students poured into Tiananmen Square, the Chinese government almost blew it. Then they were vicious, they were horrible, but they put it down with strength. That shows you the power of strength. Egypt: Egypt is turning into a hot bed of radical Islam. The current protest is another coup attempt. We should never have abandoned Mubarak. Syria and Libya: Assad is a bad man. Gadhafi was a bad man. Mubarak had a terrible human rights record. But they were assisting us — at least Gadhafi and Mubarak — in fighting radical Islamic terrorists. Hungary: etc. Trump sure does seem to admire anyone who can make the trains run on time, doesn’t he? |

Jean Carroll is waging a battle on a front separate from the stolen government documents and the seditious planning of an assault on the Capitol or the New York State charges of cheating on the valuation of his property or the tampering with elections charge out of Georgia; she is accusing him of rape. And she's made more headway than other victims. Next week (Oct. 19) Trump has been forced by a judge to sit for a deposition. The judge isn't taking Trump's "let's delay this" shit. Trump’s legal team has tried various legal tactics to delay the lawsuit and prevent him from being questioned by Carroll’s attorneys, but Judge Kaplan wrote that it was time to move forward, especially given the “advanced age” of Carroll, 78, and Trump, 76, and perhaps other witnesses. |
