Subject: RE: Origins: We Shall Overcome (Frank Hamilton) From: Joe Offer Date: 27 Nov 20 - 12:09 PM Well, I don't think I would attribute the song to Frank or any individual. It was a group effort, and Frank certainly played a major part in its development. I had to change the thread title to something that wasn't quite so misleading. I think it may have been a moderator who changed the thread to Origins: We Shall Overcome (Frank Hamilton), but that's just wrong. See what Frank (Stringsinger) has to say about his part in the development of the song in this thread (click) |
Subject: RE: video: Frank Hamilton's part in We Shall Overcome From: voyager Date: 27 Nov 20 - 01:22 PM J.O. - thanks for connecting the dots here... I still don't know how to post a 'Mudcat thread' in a message (other than posting the URL). Apologies if the 1st post was misleading. voyager |
Subject: RE: video: Frank Hamilton's part in We Shall Overcome From: EBarnacle Date: 27 Nov 20 - 07:06 PM What we are discussing is that Frank was the right person at the right time. Without his intervention, it is likely the song would not have had the penetration and influence it has. No, he was not the populariser but he was a critical link in the chain. Thank you Stringsinger. |

Subject: RE: video: Frank Hamilton's part in We Shall Overcome From: GUEST,Lynn Gold Date: 27 Dec 20 - 12:13 AM I've known Frank for over sixty years, performed solo, accompanied me, others, on stage and recordings, in early '60's, I met a tow headed kid at a hoot surrounded by numerous instruments, all of which he played beautifully, you'd sing him a song once and he'd play an exquisite accompaniment instantly, true, no nepotism here, his instruments could sound like a koto, harpsichord, down home blues or wild celtic band of one...we called him a 'genius', say it now and he sputters...he cares a lot about his fellow man and all that's good and decent in this world such as it is...Guy Carawan was like that, too, and Pete, Woody who he knew...he founded schools to teach traditional music on a shoestring, still teaches, plays, writes, carrying on for the love of it All...he is kind, loyal, thoughtful, the kind of friend, if you prayed, you'd pray for...then again, he's really a friend to all...and loving, he's a genius at it |
