Subject: Hilton Valentine died today From: Big Al Whittle Date: 31 Jan 21 - 10:11 AM Very sad - one of my first guitar heroes. Must have been a nice guy - he replied to my fan letter. Simply loved The Animals. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Hilton Valentine (1943-2021) From: GUEST,Nick Dow Date: 31 Jan 21 - 01:55 PM I interviewed various members of the Animals and also met Spencer Davis on the same gig, this was in conjunction with the BBC. I spent sometime talking to the original drummer John Steele, and Alan Price's original replacement Dave Rowberry. Spencer Davis dedicated a Muddy Waters Blues song to me publicly that night. I also saw Eric Burdon at the Great British Rhythm and Blues Festival. He was stunning, and took my mind off the fact that my Van had been written off in an accident. The Animals were years ahead of their time and Hilton Valentine's guitar riff set me off playing guitar in 1963. Loads of memories. RIP Hilton Valentine and thank you. |

Subject: RE: Hilton Valentine died today From: punkfolkrocker Date: 31 Jan 21 - 02:19 PM The Animals were one of my earliest favorite Bands when I got into music aged 12 in the early 70s.. By then, they were considered old fashioned. But their music was available on pocket money friendly cheap LPs [MFP ?] at Woolworths.. Mastering "House of the rising sun" was one of me and my mates greatest achievements when he got a guitar for us both to learn on in evenings after school.. In the late 70's I discovered an Animals LP in an American 'cut out' specialists imports shop. I'd never known this one ever existed. [one good thing to say about the21st Cent. internet..] Apparently a USA only release; like other UK bands that had been tied up in legal problems during the 1960s Animalism [USA only] At a time when Wilko Johnson was our favourite inspirational guitarist, Hilton's superb playing on that LP was right up my street.. Such a shame it was so obscure, legally withheld from most British listeners... |

R-J, Down Under (EB & The Animals were just about my most favourite group of the 60s - and there are SO MANY vying for that top position, haha! :) |

Subject: RE: Obit: Hilton Valentine (1943-2021) From: GUEST,Nick Dow Date: 01 Feb 21 - 07:10 AM That's why they called them The Animals. Years ahead of their time as I said. By the way it was Mick Gallagher I interviewed not Dave Rowberry. Memory going again! He went on to work with the Blockheads in 2009. |
