Subject: Lyr Add: Rotes Harr From: RunrigFan Date: 20 Feb 21 - 04:19 PM ROTES HAAR Composed by Francis Villon Im Sommer war das Gras so tief, Daß jeder Wind daran vorüberlief.
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Rotes Harr From: RunrigFan Date: 20 Feb 21 - 04:19 PM The grass was so deep in summer, That every wind passed away. I felt your blood there And how it ran over to me hot. You just touched my face. That's where he just died, the hard man, Because such love doesn't exist anymore... I fell in love with your red hair. In the field all summer was The red poppy as red as your hair. Now it's getting mowed, the grass, The colorful flowers are also withering there. And when the red poppy is so pale Has become, then there is no point, That there are still white clouds... I fell in love with your red hair. You say there will soon be children, When you fall in love with your red hair, Red as poppy, white as snow. Many children are returning in the fall, Why shouldn't it be with us? You will also remain my red deer in winter, And if there are a thousand more beautiful ones... I fell in love with your red hair. |
Subject: Lyr Add: Rotes Haar From: Reinhard Date: 21 Feb 21 - 03:16 AM (moderators: can you please correct the spelling of the thread title) This is of course originally in French, from the medieval poet François Villon. The German verses above were re-penned, not translated, by the expressionist lyricist Paul Zech. Red Hair sung by Schotte has another English translation: In summer was the grass so deep, With every wind beyond to sweep That’s when I felt your blood so tight. And as it shivered down my spine, Your lips just softly kissing mine, My heart and soul were lifting like a kite, And suddenly for sure I knew Your red hair makes me fall in love with you. In summer flowers everywhere they didn’t shine like your red hair. But now the grass is mowed and nothing will remain. When flowers do not bloom no more, And chilly winds blow from the shore There is no use of wandering again. And there’s no need for white clouds, too. Your red hair makes me fall in love with you. They say there will be children soon, when we make love beneath the moon, so red like blood and white as snow. When children use to come at fall We’ll also watch our baby crawl. In wintertime you’ll stay my red-haired doe. I love you every day anew. Your red hair makes me fall in love with you. |
Subject: Lyr Add: Ich hab mich in den rotes Haar verliebt From: Reinhard Date: 21 Feb 21 - 03:47 AM Christian Redl sang slightly different words on his album of Villon/Zech poems, "Vierzehnundeinviertel Jahr" (Hypertension, 1990). I think the Mond/moon in the second verse should still be Mohn/poppy but Redl clearly sings Mond. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Rotes Haar From: Reinhard Date: 21 Feb 21 - 08:25 AM The verses you posted at the beginning of the thread are exactly Paul Zech's verses (with slightly different punctuation) from his book, François Villon, Paul Zech: Die Balladen und lasterhaften Lieder des Herrn François Villon in deutscher Nachdichtung, Weimar 1931, p.77. In this book, the poem has the title "Eine kleine Liebesballade gedichtet für Jeanne Cul de Quée" (A little love ballad written for Jeanne Cul de Quée). |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Rotes Haar From: RunrigFan Date: 21 Feb 21 - 08:39 AM so Corvus sing similar words |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Rotes Haar From: Reinhard Date: 21 Feb 21 - 08:53 AM Yes, with minor differences in three places. I'm quite sure I hear "hartes Haar" (hard hair) in the second verse but this doesn't make any sense. Also, I've used the current spelling rules, i.e. "dass" and "blass" instead of the old "daß" and "blaß". |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Rotes Haar From: Joe Offer Date: 22 Feb 21 - 08:03 AM Dass and blass? This is Rechtschreibung? Say it isn't so, Reinhard! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Rotes Haar From: Reinhard Date: 22 Feb 21 - 12:41 PM It is, Joe. Since the German orthography reform of 1996, the double 's' is an 'ss' after a short stressed vowel and an 'ß' after a long vowel. Now you can easily distiguish 'Masse' (mass, crowd) from 'Maße' (units of measurement). And there aren't different forms of the double 's' in singular and plural forms anymore, e.g. Faß, pl. Fässer is now Fass, pl. Fässer. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Rotes Haar From: GUEST,keberoxu Date: 22 Feb 21 - 05:22 PM I'm curious to see the original französisch by Herr François Villon. Will anybody else's post beat me to posting same? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Rotes Haar From: Reinhard Date: 22 Feb 21 - 05:39 PM I haven't found Monsieur Villon's poème yet, so go on, keberoxu. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Rotes Haar From: Monique Date: 22 Feb 21 - 06:08 PM I couldn't find it either though I had a look at all the poems in his complete works. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Rotes Haar From: GUEST,keberoxu Date: 22 Feb 21 - 06:35 PM A quick and dirty online search did not scare up the poem, but it is reported that Klaus Kinski was partial to the Paul Zech translation in German. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Rotes Haar From: RunrigFan Date: 22 Feb 21 - 06:36 PM What;s its called? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Rotes Haar From: GUEST,Grishka Date: 23 Feb 21 - 08:18 AM The poem is by Paul Zech (1931), only "inspired" by Villon. Zech was a notorious mystifyer, but quite successful, not without cause. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Rotes Haar From: Monique Date: 23 Feb 21 - 01:15 PM If you read this paragraph at the link Grishka just posted above (for those who don't know German -like me- Google translate gives a good notion of the whole stuff) you'll indeed find out that we can look for Villon's original poem forever. Btw, Google and Dpll translators won't give fine-tuned translations, but they do help! |
