Subject: ADD: Songs of Tish Hinojosa From: Joe Offer Date: 07 May 21 - 09:59 PM Somebody reminded me of Tish Hinojosa the other day, and I though it would be good reason to post a few of her songs. I've always enjoyed her singing, although I think the last time I saw her perform was in the 1990s. She's 65 now. Her Website used to have lots of lyrics, but there aren't so many there now. https://www.mundotish.com/ Wikipedia says Tish Hinojosa was born December 6, 1955, in San Antonio Texas, the youngest of 13 children. Her parents were immigrants from Mexico. Here's her discography, also from Wikipedia:
Tish also released a CD on CDBaby, My Homeland, in 2019 |
Subject: Songs of Tish Hinojosa From: Joe Offer Date: 07 May 21 - 10:12 PM I found archive copies of lyrics for some Tish Hinojosa albums that are no longer available at her Website, https://www.mundotish.com/ https://web.archive.org/web/20050208213104/http://www.mundotish.com/lyrics.html The lyrics are sloppy, so Monique and I will be taking some time to correct and enhance them. I wouldn't ordinarily put such large quantities in a thread at one time, but they're no longer available on the Web and I thought it would be worthwhile to have them. In general, we like to have just one song per message, not an entire album's worth. |
Subject: Lyrics: Homeland (1989) Tish Hinojosa From: Joe Offer Date: 07 May 21 - 11:04 PM These lyrics from the archive of the Tish Hinojosa Website are pretty sloppy. We'll correct them sooner or later. Note that Tish published an album in 2019 called My Homeland. At first glance, it seems like all the songs are the same. In the two albums. for now, I don't know if the 2019 is a reissue of the 1989 album, or a re-recording. Homeland 1989, A&M Records Joaquin Joaquin shed a tear for the treason But who'd hear his desperate cry? He learned to speak English from tourists And reading by kerosene light He couldn't afford education But something was burning inside He heard things were good in America And that's what had been on his mind I met him when I was travelin' Through Mexico one summer day Eyes twice as old as the young man Who taught me a lesson in faith Fate made him poor but he knew there was more Though I never did see him again I know somewhere in America Joaquin must've found him a place Chorus: Joaquin loves his homeland But it can't give him enough He wants a good life, a job, and wife And some children with dreams that come true Moonless night crossing the badlands echo: Ayúdame Dios (Help me God) Sign of the cross o'er his chest echo: Mi vida mi fe (My life my faith) Pounding heart racing 'til sunrise Mile after mile without rest Back at the border there's papers But politics get in the way It may not be right but they take through the night Some pay for the dream with their lives. West Side of Town Felipe was a young man when he crossed the Rio Grande Headin' north to Texas where he grew into a man He fixed cars and worked the wars and raised a family San Antonio was home on the West Side of Town Young Maria dreamed of singin' in a concert hall Past the plaza and the village church adobe wall Hard times stole her innocence but drove the woman's heart San Antonio bound to the West Side of Town Chorus: She was proud and lived on faith He was strong in his own way They were pilgrims that made A good life the hard way Felipe lost his first wife in 1943 Seven growing children and desperately in need Maria came to look for work and found her destiny With one child of her own to the west side on town They were married years went by and now we were thirteen Days were good and days were bad but mostly they were lean School and shoes and food and books believin' in a prayer God must know his way 'round on the West Side of Town Chorus We would go to Mexico and Mama she would cry For the things we'll never know she had to leave behind Sisters, brother know too well what memories can do Climbin' up when you're down from the West Side of Town Daddy never owned a house but build a strong foundation Mama bought her own damn house with self-determination They're both gone but I know that they're listening to this song 'Neath the San Fernando ground on the West Side of Town Chorus Last Chorus Peregrinos de ayer (Pilgrims from yesterday) Del destino y la fe (Through destiny and faith) They were pilgrims that made A good life the hard way

Subject: Lyrics: My Homeland (Tish Hinojosa), 2019 From: Joe Offer Date: 07 May 21 - 11:32 PM Tish published an album in 2019 called My Homeland. At first glance, it seems like all the songs are the same in the two albums. It sounds to me that the 2019 is a re-recording of the 1989 album, but I could be wrong. Her voice is good on the 2019 album, but not as thrilling as the sound of her voice in the 1990s. But maybe I'm wrong, and the two albums are the same. These lyrics are the only ones available at Tish Hinojosa's Website in 2021. https://www.mundotish.com/lyrics Monique and I agree that they are not completely accurate, so we will be working to clean them up. Here is the songlist for My Homeland. Lyrics are in messages below.

Subject: ADD: Donde Voy/Where I Go (Tish Hinojosa) From: Joe Offer Date: 08 May 21 - 03:45 PM We've been adding songs to supplement the Rise Up Singing/Rise Again songbooks, and Tish Hinojosa's "Donde Voy" was chosen:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2USbjl8r3p0&t=167s The Taiwanese singer, Chyi Yu, wrote new English verses to Hinojosa's songs: All alone I have started my journey To the darkness of darkness I go With a reason, I stopped for a moment In this world full of pleasure so frail Town after town on I travel Pass through faces I know and know not Like a bird in flight, sometimes I topple Time and time again, just farewells Donde voy, donde voy Day by day, my story unfolds Solo estoy, solo estoy All alone as the day I was born Till your eyes rest in mine, I shall wander No more darkness I know and know not For your sweetness I traded my freedom Not knowing a farewell awaits You know, hearts can be repeatedly broken Making room for the harrows to come Along with my sorrows I buried My tears, my smile, your name https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xrdh4MrHV0 Linda Ronstadt recorded the song as "Adonde Voy" on her Winter Light album: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Go3CK6SgKMI |

Subject: ADD: Something in the Rain (Tish Hinojosa) From: Joe Offer Date: 08 May 21 - 03:55 PM This one always makes me cry. This is my transcription, based on what I found on one of "those" sites and corrected. SOMETHING IN THE RAIN (Tish Hinojosa) Mom and Dad have worked the fields I don't know how many years I'm just a boy but I know how And go to school when work is slow We have seen our country's roads Bakersfield to Illinois And when troubles come our way Oh yeah, I've seen my daddy pray There's something wrong with little sister I hear her crying by my side Mama's shaking as she holds her We try to hold her through the night And Mom says, Close your eyes, mijito Dream of someplace far from here Like the pictures in your schoolbooks Someday you can take us there CHORUS There must be something in the rain I'm not sure just what that means Abuelita talks of sins of man Of dust that's in our hands There must be something in the rain Well, what else could cause this pain Those airplanes cure the plants so things can grow Oh no, it must be something in the rain Little sister's gone away Mama's working long again And me, I think I understand About our life, about our land Well, talkers talk and dreamers dream I will find a place between I'm afraid but I believe That we can change these hurting fields 'Cause there's something in the rain But there's more here in our hands 'Buelita's right about the sins of man Whose profits rape the land And the rains are pouring down From the growers to the towns And until we break the killing chains There's something in the rain https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qnxPGUctqUE |
Subject: ADD: La Llorona (as sung by Tish Hinojosa) From: Joe Offer Date: 08 May 21 - 04:01 PM La Llorona is traditional, but Tish Hinojosa did my favorite recording of this haunting song. The post below is uncorrected, but will be fixed later. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G85MDi4GeMI Thread #12887 Message #112714 Posted By: Tom B. 09-Sep-99 - 01:20 AM Thread Name: Lyr Add: La Llorona Subject: Lyr Add: LA LLORONA (from Tish Hinojosa)
Kicky C did a good translation and Conan I think is right about the Virgin being Mary. The Llorona is a Mexican Legend/Folk Song with many different versions. It is in the text book "Conexiones" that I use to teach third semester Spanish in the community college here ((c) 1999 Prentice Hall). One of my students just TONIGHT put the lyrics on the board and sang the song, beautifully, with guitar, so it's a real coincidence to see this thread. |
