Subject: TISH HINOJOSA Sept 16th-only UK concert From: evansakes Date: 08 Sep 07 - 03:27 PM Sep 16th TISH HINOJOSA (USA) ONLY UK GIG! TwickFolk at The CABBAGE PATCH PUB 67 LONDON ROAD Twickenham Middlesex TW1 3SZ My Space www.MySpace.com/TwickFolk Advance Tickets www.wegottickets.com/location/466 Website www.TwickenhamFolkClub.com We are pleased to have secured an exclusive UK performance from Mexican-American singer-songwriter, TISH HINOJOSA. In her long and distinguished career Tish has enchanted audiences from el barrio to the White House (where she performed in front of Bill and Hillary Clinton and a group of America's top Hispanic leaders). Since the late 70's she has refused to be pigeon-holed, steadfastly pursuing her distinctive cross-cultural approach to music. In the process, she has become one of the most acclaimed and beloved artists in the contemporary Latin and folk scene. Through a purity of voice and vision that embraces folk, pop, tejano, country and latino styles, she reflects modern America's multicultural richness and performs with sincerity, heart, musicality and charm. The youngest of thirteen children growing up in San Antonio, Texas, Tish began performing as a teenager. She combined a love of traditional Mexican songs inherited from her immigrant parents with the pop and rock her elder siblings were listening to on the radio but was also influenced by the likes of Baez, Dylan and the other catalysts of the early 60's folk revival. During the course of a career that spans more than twelve albums she's picked up many an award not only for her music but for her social activism. She is frequently asked to appear at multicultural events, works on behalf of children, bilingual education, civil liberties, immigration, farm workers, and other humanitarian causes. She has collaborated frequently with many of the top names in folk/roots as well as having her songs recorded by the likes of Linda Ronstadt ('Donde Voy', currently playing on our MySpace jukebox). Last in London earlier this summer to spearhead the launch of London's first Latin American Festival during which she performed entirely in Spanish, Tish has agreed to fly over from Germany for this one appearance, promising us more of a singer-songwriter evening (but will play as many Mexican songs as people care to request!). ps If you're not familiar with Tish's music take a look at this little video http://www.mundotish.com/cs.mov "A talented songwriter with an understated but utterly unaffected delivery... vivid... touching... pointed... playful... engaging... A rare gift for melody that's perfect for Hinojosa's lovely, relaxed soprano." THE WASHINGTON POST Tish's website http://www.mundotish.com/ |

Subject: RE: TISH HINOJOSA Sept 16th-only UK concert From: Joe Offer Date: 08 Sep 07 - 10:48 PM I'd agree with Alice. I've seen Tish perform a few times, and each concert was a delight, a very interesting mix of songs. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: TISH HINOJOSA Sept 16th-only UK concert From: Dave Swan Date: 08 Sep 07 - 11:10 PM Do NOT miss a chance to see her. The last time I attended one of Tish Hinojosa's performances, Joan Baez wandered out onstage and they shared a couple of songs. It was a treat to hear Baez, but I'd have been happy to hear an evening of Hinojosa uninterrupted. D |
Subject: RE: TISH HINOJOSA Sept 16th-only UK concert From: JedMarum Date: 08 Sep 07 - 11:22 PM Tish Hinojosa is one of America's gems. A lovely woman and a lovely singer. I am certain the UK will love her as much as America does! |
Subject: RE: TISH HINOJOSA Sept 16th-only UK concert From: JedMarum Date: 08 Sep 07 - 11:29 PM I gotta say, I played the Tucson Folk Fest a few years ago, when Tish was there ... and when I met Tish I was stunned. I'd known her pictures but she is even prettier in person. I enjoyed the band too .. stayed up way too late with her guitar player, Marvin swapping songs and stories at someone's house ... I'm not even sure how I got back to the hotel; and I was sober! |

I saw Tish with Marvin Dykhuis at the opening night of the Green Note's Latin American Festival back in July...as Tish said on the night "he plays pretty good for a gringo". She's recently married a German guy and as a result spends quite a bit of time over in Hamburg these days...that's the only reason we've been able to entice her over for a one-off show (it's one of those occasions where you thank God for low-cost airlines) TwickFolk |
Subject: RE: TISH HINOJOSA Sept 16th-only UK concert From: JedMarum Date: 09 Sep 07 - 10:35 AM I'd seen the news that Tish is now in Germany ... I suspect that's a far cry from her south and west Texas roots! I wonder if she misses the desert? The heat, the dust, the rattlesnakes? Or the sunsets, the spring thunderstorms or midnight clear skies? ;-) Marvin is a really fine player - a musician's musician. That session in Tucson was quite a mix of players and styles. Kristina Olsen, Marvin, me and a few other names I don't recall sat 'til just before dawn, playing along with whatever song anyone started. It was a really good time with some really fine players. There seemed to be plenty of adult beverages and mild recreational pharmaceuticals going around. I don't join in those activities, but can enjoy the atmosphere they sometimes create. It was a nice night. |
Subject: RE: TISH HINOJOSA Sept 16th-only UK concert From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 09 Sep 07 - 01:26 PM San Antonio, Tish Hinojosa's home town is not desert, no dust and can get quite humid-sticky hot at times in the summer. Mentioning rattlesnakes, I remember the zoo, where they used to fry up rattlesnake for the public occasionally, perhaps still do. My parents lived there for a while, they had a large and very productive pecan tree in their yard. The whole area is well-treed. San Antonio is a city of well over one million, 60% Hispanic. They have beautifully landscaped the San Antonio River, and it is a pleasure in the evenings to dine in one of the restaurants overlooking the people parade along the River walks. Look up threads on the Alamo here at Mudcat; there are mentions of other sights including the old missions. The German-settled hill country is within driving distance. In the spring, look for the dates of the Tejano Conjunto Festival, a good time to visit. |
Subject: RE: TISH HINOJOSA Sept 16th-only UK concert From: JedMarum Date: 09 Sep 07 - 01:38 PM Yes - I realize San Antonio is Tish Hinojosa's home town and is not the desert. But she is very very popular in West Texas and has lpayed there quite a bit - that is what I was referring to. The US will miss her ... but I'm sure Germany and Europe will love her. I love San Antonio, too! Great town and I love to visit. Rattlesnake is actually pretty good - but it can be touch as shoe leather. |
Subject: RE: TISH HINOJOSA Sept 16th-only UK concert From: Dan Schatz Date: 09 Sep 07 - 04:28 PM Tish was living in Austin when I lived down there - what a treat to hear her on a regular basis. The version of "La Llorona" on my new CD is learned from her. She's a treasure - and one of the nicest people you'll ever meet. Don't miss her! Dan Schatz |
Subject: RE: TISH HINOJOSA Sept 16th-only UK concert From: evansakes Date: 09 Sep 07 - 04:31 PM There's an interesting newsletter on Tish's website in which she elaborates on the watershed position her career seems to be at in 2008. It's signed "Tish (aka Frau Leticia Sedlmair)" which is a nice touch! http://www.mundotish.com/corner.html Please encourage anyone you know in the London area with an interest in Hispanic music to come see her on the 16th....we're planning to make it a bit of a Texan/Tejano/Tejana evening and we'll also be playing music from the likes of Texas Tornados, Los Lobos, Linda Ronstadt and others. |
Subject: RE: TISH HINOJOSA-also on the bill this Sunday From: evansakes Date: 14 Sep 07 - 09:23 AM Opening for Tish will be the owner of (arguably) the best voice on the folk scene never to have sung professionally...our very own Sue Graves who will be taking a half hour break from manning the door. Not only that Sue will be accompanied for the night by former 'Acoustic Strawb' Brian Willoughby. Brian's a good friend of TwickFolk and in his capacity as 'non exec' director regularly pops by to check up on us(!) He's joined Sue spontaneously a few times before but this will be the first time they've actually planned it in advance. |
