Subject: moons, especially full moons From: keberoxu Date: 26 Jun 21 - 10:26 PM Thus far, in 2021, we have had these full moons, according to the Farmer's Almanac: Wolf Moon Snow Moon Worm Moon Pink Moon Flower Moon Strawberry Moon Some of these were SUPERMOONS, of which there are to be no more this year -- the Strawberry Moon is said to be the last Supermoon of this year. To come: Buck Moon Sturgeon Moon Harvest Moon Hunter's Moon Beaver Moon Cold Moon ... I don't know about some of those names. Are there other names? I ought to go see. Be back later. |
Subject: RE: BS: another thread about moons esp full ones From: keberoxu Date: 26 Jun 21 - 10:30 PM hmmmmmm: Should a Harvest Moon occur early, in September rather than October, it may be called a Full Corn Moon. This is as opposed to the Green Corn Moon in August (but the Algonquin name for the August moon is Sturgeon Moon, from their fishing). |
Subject: RE: BS: another thread about moons esp full ones From: keberoxu Date: 26 Jun 21 - 10:31 PM As the Pink Moon is that once-a-year full moon which is used to calculate Easter Sunday, some call it the Paschal Moon. |
Subject: RE: BS: another thread about moons esp full ones From: keberoxu Date: 26 Jun 21 - 10:34 PM . . . and I didn't know there was such a thing as a Black Moon. No, this is not an eclipse. It is what happens every nineteen years or so, when there are full moons in January and in March but NOT in February. |
Subject: RE: BS: another thread about moons esp full ones From: Jos Date: 27 Jun 21 - 07:02 AM Can't we go back to having just new moons, full moons, harvest moons and blue moons? I'm tired of all these new-fangled moon names, supposedly 'traditional Native American' but now something to do with farmers, apparently. And for that matter, all the special 'days' and 'weeks' and 'months' that are constantly foisted on us? In the last few weeks I have been told to celebrate 'world gin day, 'world chardonnay day' and 'international rosé day' along with 'fathers (or is it fathers' or father's) day'. And all the other 'worthy causes'. |

Subject: RE: BS: another thread about moons esp full ones From: Stilly River Sage Date: 27 Jun 21 - 10:34 AM It used to be Fathers' Day, but got changed over time to Father's Day. There are lots of causes jumping on the "day" bandwagon. A friend of mine sends out several a day on his Facebook account, just to show the absurdity of it. Food alone has overwhelmed the calendar. |
Subject: RE: BS: another thread about moons esp full ones From: robomatic Date: 27 Jun 21 - 04:27 PM Well, thanks to the granularity provided by the amount of data we can manage via computerization, everyone gets to name a moon. I'm not proposing my own just yet, but we need to hear from the Druids. |
