I did loads of cycling at school. 'Training' rides every evening but was never keen on events. Don't suppose it did me any harm though. May have helped todays legs go walkies. I enjoyed bike rides. Taking Part does you good.

I have never been good at running and, in my last sports day at junior school, I was put into the obstacle race along with the other no-hopers. One obstacle was a tarpaulin stretched out and pegged down for the whole race to wriggle under. I arrived at it pretty much in last place but emerged first. By the final part, the sack race stage, I was still ahead and that race became deadly serious - as important as any gold medal won by Usain Bolt. I remember vividly being cheered across the line in first place by the school caretaker.

My elation didn't last long. When I went up to collect my prize (an Airfix kit of a model aeroplane), the Headmaster turned to one of the teachers and said in an incredulous voice "What, him?"

Life can be cruel!

Although not overweight, well not then, I was not built for speed as a kid. I was in the last few in all the running races, until one day we did a cross country run of about 5 miles. Suddenly I was up there near the head of the pack. it turned out that I had stamina not speed.

"Fun-size bananas"

The only fun involved in eating "fun-size Mars Bars" comes when you eat at least five of them...

Couldn't agree more, Doug. When I was in my thirties I was a very keen cyclist (fun only, never in a competitive way) and I covered thousands of miles a year commuting to work and just cycling for fun. One day we took our two little kids for a picnic in a big open field in Epping Forest. For a laugh, and to the kids' amusement, I took off and ran round the field, around a quarter of a mile.

I couldn't walk for a week. I'm simply not built for running.

'"Fun run" is an oxymoron.'

Yes, it's the same kind of 'double speak' as in 'fun-size bananas'.

Egg and spoon race?
Sack race?
Wheelbarrow race?
Not forgetting the pancake race.

Do they count as fun runs?

Seen on twitter recently:

"My kids neither won nor lost today at #sportsday, It was all about ‘taking part’ ??"

Most adults suffer losses regularly - losing jobs, contracts, failing tests etc.
Children need to know how to cope with losing, it’s part of life.
