Subject: BS: Whitby tides folk week From: Mo the caller Date: 10 Aug 21 - 10:48 AM As the FF is cancelled I shall be spending some beach time with my Grand-daughter. I've been trying to make sense on the tide tables to work out if we could walk along the fossil beach to Robin Hoods Bay. But my local knowledge isn't good enough. How long after high tide before you can get round past the harbour? And how long does it stay low enough to get back. |
Subject: RE: BS: Whitby tides From: Mr Red Date: 10 Aug 21 - 02:01 PM Well I am no expert but my guess is you have 11½ hours give or take a safety margin. High tide to high tide. But I suppose it depends on when in the cycle pinch point(s) become clear. And how long does it take to walk to/from them. There is always a bus back, he said in an uncertain voice. Whitby tide times |

Subject: RE: BS: Whitby tides From: Mo the caller Date: 10 Aug 21 - 04:26 PM High tide to high tide won't help. The beach on the East Side is very small then. What I'm asking is how long before I can get round past the harbour. |
Subject: RE: BS: Whitby tides From: Mr Red Date: 11 Aug 21 - 03:06 AM what to do around Whitby - free PDF quick squint won't cost anything. UK fossil collecting, Robin Hoods Bay - mind you I don't fancy being caught against those cliffs! There is one for Whitby U tub video of fossil collecting - Whitby & RHB may they have advice. |
Subject: RE: BS: Whitby tides From: Dave the Gnome Date: 11 Aug 21 - 03:10 AM If in doubt, don't risk it! Both the cliff top route and the cinder track to Robin Hood's Bay are very pleasant walks. The bus back is very regular and last time I caught it, I travelled with Martin Carthy on his way to Sainsburys. I can't guarantee it will happen when you go though :-) |

Subject: RE: BS: Whitby tides From: gnomad Date: 12 Aug 21 - 06:05 PM Don't try it. There are various cut-off points between Wy and RHB, and some pretty high cliffs, any one of which can stymie you. For just the bit "under" the Abbey you could try walking to the end of the bit of beach and see how long before the next high tide (see tide tables available on line or at local angling shops), then allow a bit less to get back. Such a method is only to be attempted under calm conditions, and is not reccommended. Good footwear essential. On the whole, treat the waterside east of Whitby with EXTREME caution. |
Subject: RE: BS: Whitby tides From: Malcolm Storey Date: 12 Aug 21 - 06:45 PM It can be tricky. Gordon Tyrrall decided to try it some years ago and finished up being rescued by the lifeboat and making the headlines in the Whitby Gazette. Almost fame. |
