Subject: RE: BS: Folk wisdom 2022 From: Thompson Date: 28 Dec 21 - 03:16 AM Oh, love that! Though sometimes patriotism is the resistance of the oppressed. Went out yesterday to buy a second-last Christmas present: Shashi Tharoor's new book, Inglorious Empire, about Britain's centuries-long asset-stripping of India, and was annoyed yet pleased to find that it had sold out. (Fact from the book: at the beginning of the 17th century, India had 27% of world trade; by the time the British left, it had 3%… resistance was necessary to remove this imperial leech.) |
Subject: RE: BS: Folk wisdom 2022 From: Malcolm Storey Date: 28 Dec 21 - 06:41 AM Statistics is a dangerous tool. In 1600 America North and South was mostly colonised by European Imperialism, Australasia did not exist as far as the then civilised world knew. Africa was being pillaged for profit both of material and human assets. I am not defending colonialism in any shape or form - it still exists but in a different guise and continues to penalise the poor. |

Subject: RE: BS: Folk wisdom 2022 From: Malcolm Storey Date: 02 Jan 22 - 01:15 PM Mr Red There was a resent report that policing the Insulate Britain demonstrations cost the Met £4 Million. Meaningless - was that the actual cost of those officers carrying out policing duties or was it the extra cost? If the former then the vast majority of that cost would have been incurred no matter what. Statistics as you point out need context. |
Subject: RE: BS: Folk wisdom 2022 From: Mr Red Date: 02 Jan 22 - 04:55 PM Golden rule of statistical politics Don't give context, it only confuses the plebs who vote for them. Subject: RE: BS: Folk wisdom 2022 From: Donuel Date: 05 Jan 22 - 03:11 PM The golden rule of problem solving; The KISS method of problem solving has been 'keep it simple stupid'. The fatal flaw in that method is assuming going from point a to point b is a preferred straight line. If that goal is incorrect from the git go you crash. Maybe you needed to go from point b to point q in a curved route. Boeing made the best example of this fundamental mistake by trying to fit the new larger fuel efficient engines onto their old 1960's 737 airframe. If they tried that the engines would scrape on the ground. If they tried to elongate the landing gear so the engines would not hit the ground there would no room to retract the landing gear. So they tried putting the engines way forward. But that caused the whole plane to pitch upward. They did that anyway and added an MCAS system to compensate and automaticaly push the plane downward and called the plane 737 Max. Each problem created a new problem down the line when they should have started with an all new airframe to start with. In the real world the plane would automaticly push the plane down into the ground or ocean. folk wisdom- Don't build a modern car on a model T frame. |

Subject: RE: BS: Folk wisdom 2022 From: Mr Red Date: 06 Jan 22 - 04:05 AM The fatal flaw in that method is assuming going from point a to point b is a preferred straight line. If that goal is incorrect from the git go you crash. Maybe you needed to go from point b to point q in a curved route. <YEABUT> always assuming the commutative law applies </YEABUT> A to B (or Q) is not automatically the same as (Q or) B to A - it might be downhill (or up!) Which puts a different slant........................... on it. When trying to find the best coefficients for a non-canonical digital filter (as you do) with a computer program (in FORTRAN since you ask) I could never decide if the best fit was just a blind dip with better ones lurking - and over which hump? After 30+ years it still bugs me. |
