An insightful and thought-provoking commentary on the achievements of Desmond Tutu, from one of Australia's best journalists (IMHO), Stan Grant:

What we can learn from Desmond Tutu , a man for whom forgiveness trumped vengeance

This man will be remembered after
many of today's noisemakers are forgotten.
I have never needed his kind of courage,
and it is humbling to witness and bear testimony to.

There is no doubt that he, perfectly legitimately, used his collar to protect himself against the kinds of attacks suffered by others who opposed apartheid. His friendship with Nelson Mandela was another strength. But, most of all, he was brave. He was an amusing and humorous man who always smiled, but there was steel behind his sense of fun. South Africa owes a lot to him, less so to the third-rate ANC leaders after Mandela who have threatened to blow their legacy. Dunno whether "the Arch" ever took a glass, but I've raised a glass to him anyway (and shed a little tear) tonight.

Incidentally, there's a lovely photo of him and Nelson Mandela on the BBC news website, and, somewhat unexpectedly, a lovely tribute by Bob Geldof of all people on the Guardian website.
