Subject: Obit: Books by the Bronte sisters From: Bonzo3legs Date: 26 Dec 21 - 04:15 PM Having just watched a fine video of The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Bronte, we discovered that the only other book she wrote - Agnes Grey, has never been made into a film. Luckily, Mrs Bonzo found copies of both books in the bookcase behind her armchair!! |

Subject: RE: Books by the Bronte sisters From: Thompson Date: 27 Dec 21 - 12:44 PM A lot of Victorian books are available for good prices as ebooks, and you can change the text size. |
Subject: RE: Books by the Bronte sisters From: Bonzo3legs Date: 27 Dec 21 - 01:01 PM I know, but I prefer actual books. The ones we have were bought by Mrs Bonzo's dad in Buenos Aires 70+ years ago! |
Subject: RE: Books by the Bronte sisters From: Dave the Gnome Date: 27 Dec 21 - 02:02 PM My daughters live in Haworth, about 200 yards from the parsonage. We live about 3 miles away. Haworth is now the first to achieve the status of "fairtrade village". Probably far too modern for you Bonzo :-) Branwell seems to have been a complete arsehole. Old man Bronte seemed OK for a vicar. The girls were a product of their age and upbringing. |

Subject: RE: Books by the Bronte sisters From: Bonzo3legs Date: 27 Dec 21 - 04:05 PM But they were very clever! |
Subject: RE: Books by the Bronte sisters From: Thompson Date: 28 Dec 21 - 03:29 AM Everyone was smaller then. Average heights have soared in the last two centuries. Example: the Dutch were the smallest people in Europe 150 years ago and are now friendly giants. |
Subject: RE: Books by the Bronte sisters From: Big Al Whittle Date: 28 Dec 21 - 06:26 AM Several years ago I visited Haworth and had a look round the parsonage. To round the visit off I bought a copy of Jane Eyre from the bookshop. I looked round for Charlotte to sign it, but I think she was on a lunchbreak. When I got the book home, I opened it (as one does) and was dimayed to find all the pages were blank. So I sent the book back and phoned up the shop to complain. They said, hang on! When they checked, all that consignment of books were blank. Apparently I was the first person to actually open one |
Subject: RE: Books by the Bronte sisters From: Dave the Gnome Date: 28 Dec 21 - 07:47 AM I'm just about to nip over, Al, shall I have a look if she is there yet? :-) |
Subject: RE: Books by the Bronte sisters From: Stilly River Sage Date: 28 Dec 21 - 04:53 PM I haven't reread Jane Eyre for a while. I always find new things to admire with every reading. |
Subject: RE: Books by the Bronte sisters From: Dave the Gnome Date: 30 Dec 21 - 06:23 AM Going over again on Friday - Anyone want me to get anything? :-) |
