Very sad to read of the death of Bamber Gascogne at the age of 87. University Challenge was a ‘must watch’ for many, including me, during his 23-year tenure as presenter and quizmaster. A great personality, and a fine presentational style. RIP.

‘Gascoigne’, of course. iPad auto-‘correct’ has much to answer for.

Quite a character. Wrote lots of history books. I see he even wrote a musical - Share My Lettuce, which was produced in London in 1957 and performed by Maggie Smith and Kenneth Williams

At the age of 80 unepectedly inherited a country mansion, restored it, and tranferred it to a trust.

There's now a opera house in the grounds.

Yes, very sad. University Cha;llenge was a must when I was younger. Fascinating about West Horsley Place. Thanks Dave.

It's never been the same since Paxo took over from Bamber Grassgroins (as we always affectionately call him in our house - I don't think he'd have minded!) A good egg was Bamber. I'm looking forward to the upcoming tributes.
