There's a verse that says:

And there`ll be be cries or cribbin`.
We`ll not wear the Blue Ribbon.
It`s the Old Red Oss and a crate of beer,

and beside it on the web site there's an illustration of the Oss.

The only thing is, the illustration, although it has ribbons that are painted red, shows an Oss with whiskers and the Red Oss doesn't have whiskers! Whoever drew the picture has taken it from a picture of the Blue Oss and just changed the ribbon colour.

I've a few little differences from Guest John's set - and some details of my bit of paper seem to indicate that it was copied from a written or printed source, not transcribed from audio. Most of them are fairly insignificant, but for what it's worth . . .

(Sorry - can't find any way to underline the actual differences!)

V1 - winter's wailing (did they go whaling from Padstow?)
    - summer is a-coming today

Chorus And we're following (throughout)

V2 - And we'll rise . .
   - And remember Merv . .

V3 - And there'll be no cries . . (important, that one)
    - It's the Old Red Horse . . (why "horse" when I have "'oss" everywhere else? - makes me think it was Cut-and-Pasted)

Don't they still have the children's 'osses as well. Both the Old (red) and Temperance (blue) used to have one, which brought the total up to four.

I wonder how long it'll be until there's a Rick Stein 'oss.

The Red Horse (and a crate of beer) traditionally made up the May day procession. However, some years back, the blue horse was introduced in an attempt to moderate the proceedings, although it was unsuccessful and there are now two horses and two sets of followers

You're dead right. It was Tony Deane, not Tony Cuffe. I heard it first on a CD by Chris Wood and Andy Cutting - is that where you heard it too?

Well, it depends which one. I think there are several. Tony Cuffe has written a great song by that name, based on the Padstow Mayday pageant. I've even written a brass arrangement for it in connection with a Mayday event in Norway. But there is a traditional song of the same name, I think. If you want the Tony Cuffe song , I'd be pleased to mail it to you.
