Gentle Colleagues:

Seeking music publishing information on Frank Ferera (aka Frank Ferreira) composition, Palakiko Blues, recorded by composer and his wife, Helen Louise in 1917 on Columbia. If registered, it would still be under copyright, as Ferera/Ferreira didn't die until 1951, so not PD until 2028. Anyone who's got any sheet music for ANY of his compositions might be able to give me a place to start!

Recordially yours,

Deborah Robins

This isn't the song you asked about (I got no results on that search), but it is a result for the same performer: Hapa haole hula girl.
Performers:
Helen Louise and Palakiko Ferreira [i.e. Frank Ferera]. From 1916.

This is a case where you will want to follow any bread crumbs that database provides.

There is more on that first search: These are the search results.

Hi, Deborah - I think the I think the pre-1923 public domain rule still stands. If it was published before 1923, you're home free. If after 1923, you need a copyright lawyer to understand what's in the Public Domain - but some things published in the 1930s are coming into the public domain.

My understanding is copyright is not based on copyright day, rather on life of composer + 75 years = the life of the copyright...Which, for Ferera, who died in 1951, gives him 3 more years on any copyright regardless of when it was registered...

I'll double check anyway!

Thanks!

Deborah

A Wikipedia starting point has some of the larger points: Copyright law of the United States
