Subject: READ THIS after Mudcat upgrade Nov 20 - repairs
From: Stilly River Sage
Date: 20 Nov 23 - 11:23 PM

Many of the recent threads (started within the last few weeks) show up as a title but the contents are empty when you click on them.

Don't rush out and start a new thread for each of those! Max has been working magic and will gradually populate those threads with the original contents.

If you see threads missing some messages (or all messages), post your remarks here and we can start tracking them down. This should only effect recently started threads. If you'll post the URL to the thread and the name, that would help also.

This is posted in the BS section for the logged-on members and mostly for the BS stuff, but if you notice a favorite old music thread is missing its contents, you can let us know here also.

Thanks.

There seems to be an odd sequencing of posts in some threads. I only checked the last pages of November Songs, British Politics and Trump but the posts are not time sequential

I haven't checked other threads but (Thread 172486)
And
Hamas attacks Israel part II (Thread 172831)
Both appear with threads ordered by name of poster (possibly in member number order?) when selecting 'd' (read in blocks of 50 descending order) although not when opening the whole thread.
This also seems to be affecting the order threads are listed with the 'date of last post' being dictated by the last post of whoever heads the list (in both cases 'Majoc the filk')

Hope this helps.

At the risk of breaking this thread: In addition to some believed-good threads going 500, I've noticed the 'Cat seems to have developed hiccups: entries appearing duplicated and/or out of order. In this thread (using descending order), I see:

GerryM         18 Nov 23 - 06:52 PM
keberoxu         18 Nov 23 - 04:41 PM

IF you see duplicated posts let us know also. I just looked at the one Nigel linked and it frankly looks odd. We'll have to see what the story is, they seem to be lumped by poster, not by date?

If I open a long one from the name, not the column of 50 or the "d" reverse 50, they're in order. But otherwise, they are arranged by who posted, not date. Hmmmm.

Rats: only just seen this thread, after making similar comments about duplication and shuffling in the "Cat's back" thread above The Line. Apologies for duplication of observations. Most embarrassingly, I find my own blethers often moved to the latest-entry position, which makes me look as if I've just commented in bulk. I hereby cease and desist from jogging Max's elbow.

Loading threads from the link on the right and letting the whole thing load shows posts in order. Using the "Messages" column and clicking ON THE NUMBER also puts posts in the correct order.

The "d" is programmed (I'm guessing) to go to the date, but seems to have instead defaulted to who knows what. The dates aren't in order in the Whiskey In the Jar thread but they're not lumped by names either. It's a puzzle.

My tablet on the wifi at a clinic (brought a friend for his colonoscopy) is resisting every initial attempt to open pages. And I'm still seeing goofy lineups when opening in descending order. It could be that the files are still sorting themselves, but I think Max has some tweaks ahead.

I opened Mudcat by typing in http: but I should try https. What are people seeing on their different devices and browsers?

”Loading threads from the link on the right and letting the whole thing load shows posts in order.”

What is this ‘link on the right’? I don’t see a link on the right (apart from the ‘trace’ link).

”Using the "Messages" column and clicking ON THE NUMBER also puts posts in the correct order.”

Not for me. The first few pages of, e.g., the ‘Brexit & Other UK Political Topics’ thread are in order, but the last page or so comes up grouped by poster ID.

Oops. Link on the left (thread name). ---mudelf

I just had a talk with Max. If I understand him correctly, what he did was this: he had the Mudcat messages on a 2005 version of SQL, and it took him forever to figure out how to transfer all that data to a new version. But he figured out a way to do it, and he completed that yesterday (20 Nov). He still has some tweaking to do, but the main part of the overhaul is completed.

His main question is about data integrity. If you come across any threads that are really screwed up, please post the thread URL and title here in this thread. And if you find any other glitches, post them here.

There still will be some error messages, but you should be able to get past most of them by resubmitting. When you go to https://mudcat.org/, you may get a 500 Internal Server error. If you resubmit, you should get into Mudcat.

As always, we are a work in progress, so please be patient and generous. We do this for the love of Mudcat. In other words, be nice to us. We do the best we can, and we don't get paid for it.

Happy holidays to all who have a holiday this week. If you don't have a holiday, have a good week anyhow.

-Joe-

I just had a thought about the sorting issue. In the MsExcel spreadsheet, if I go to the Data/Sort function by default it automatically sorts by Column A unless I choose a different column, or columns e.g. date column, then time column. I'm not sure if that relates to the sorting issue here, but I'm wondering if somehow the Mudcat thread data has defaulted to sorting by Column A, i.e. the name of the person posting a comment.

I've been trying to figure the logic of the sorting also. It doesn't seem to be length of the post, but the names don't seem to be alphabetical, though there are messages clumped by name.

Nigel Parsons Date: 21 Nov 23 - 06:08 AM said "Both appear with threads ordered by name of poster (possibly in member number order?)".

I don't know if there is a member number assigned to us.

Also, if I sort a spreadsheet and then add more data on lines at the end, they won't be sorted unless I hit the Data/Sort function again, so the latest entries are still in order of when they are entered.

Those posts are in post number order. If you hover over the poster's name in the list at the top you'll see the post numbers.

Post numbers would normally be in date order, so those posts (after PHJim) have been all been re-entered with new post numbers.

(Anybody using my Mudcat Browser Tools addon may notice it thinks they're new posts.)

Yes DaveRo. Interesting!

Looking at this thread Trump INDICTED x4 NO new Trump threads part III it shows all of the list in order by post number except for the last posted comment on 22 Nov 23 - 12:04 PM https://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=172859&messages=50#4192198.

Looking at the one immediately before it in the list:

https://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=172859&messages=50#4186719

and everything before that is sorted by the last number.

Interestingly, the last posted comment dated before 22 Nov 23 - 12:04 PM is dated 20 Nov 23 - 08:43 PM but is sorted numerically

FreddyHeadey,

By selecting the first few words of your identified duplicates and using search (Control + F) I can see the two locations of the posts and went in and removed three of your identified duplicates, as a test. I put a strikethrough on your list to show which were removed.

It's not the safest way to edit threads (get too many screens open and lose track, or have an error code pop up - there are still a few 500 codes in view) but it is doable. I am stopping with three because I don't know if any of these removals affect the linked songs in the index at the top of the page. It's a beautiful thread and I don't want to mess it up! Let me know if you see any change in the functionality.

But go ahead and list any of those pages that need work here still - it gives any of the editors a little easier time finding what needs attention.

I very much doubt if you can fix it with your normal tools. You'd have to change the post number and that will be a database key.

You could ask Max to do some scans to identify affected threads - ones whether dates are out of sequence, Then you could see how many of them matter. Perhaps add some comments in red at the beginning of the disordered section.

For example this thread where the question follows some of the replies:
https://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=172880

500 errors are not uncommon (DT search reliably fails with one) but I've had a few of these odd ones recently:

(Using https://mudcat.org/?age=1)

500 - Internal server error

License Error.
You tried to access the Developer Edition from IP address (109.147.163.29). Already two IP addresses are accessing ColdFusion concurrently...

DaveRo, I think that some time back we were told that the system would only allow a limited number of message submissions at one time so the error message you get could relate to that:

"Already two IP addresses are accessing ColdFusion concurrently..."

I usually copy the text of my post before hitting the Submit button, but I have also discovered that hitting the Back Arrow on the Toolbar often takes me back to the page with my text still showing in the Reply to Thread box,

Cold Fusion is the rather whimsical name for the software Mudcat is written in. (If you remember, it was claimed that nuclear fusion was possible at room temperature. Think - something powerful available to ordinary folk in their home!) Anyway, the Cold Fusion Developer Edition is - or was - available free to try out and build an application on your PC. But it's strictly limited - only the developer's PC and two others can access it. Once you deploy your system you have to buy a licence, the cost of which probably depends on the number of users.

So nobody except the developer would normally see that message. There's no point speculating about why it was exposed to the internet. It's easy to misconfigure web software.
