Yes, Hunt the Buffalo or Shoot the Buffalo. How could I leave that out? One that was actually written in journals as being sung by the trappers. Another documented one I left out (shame!) is The Mellow Horn. I recall that mentioned by Lewis H. Garrard in his Wah to Yah and the Toas Trail. Another that shows up in the journals the Rattlin' Bog (see above). And I'll get to that trading post. I'm running low on powder.

I think "Hunt the Buffalo" meets your criteria.

And if you have a banjo handy a rousing rendition of "Groundhog" might be in order. Then there's "Cumbeland Gap" -- it invokes the image of Dan'l Boone on Pinnacle Rock, shooting Injuns with his flintlock Couldn't get away with that on the top 40 this year.

There are many versions of "Over The Hills And Far Away" which dates back to Queen Anne but recently used by John Tams on the series Sharpe's Rifles; it's a great song and there are a couple of American versions listed on the DT search lyrics. It would help if you were to let us know the theme of the black powder event. Locally we have a club that has the Mountain Men theme and some French English re-enactment groups, so there are several songs in French and English they use... You are in the right place, Rachel. I'm sorry if my reference to classic singing may have given you the impression that it is the dominant matter here in the Mudcat, NO, the Mudcat is Folk, Traditional and Blues mainly. It happens that this people is so generous and comprehensive, that they accept the discussion of all types of music. Please do not hesitate to follow up on your specialties, otherwise I would feel guilty ! :)

Most people who look at my pages assume I am a musician, but truth is I can only create the page due to the wonder of computers (though I have done a few of the tunes completely on my own - and I rather like the simplicity of what I did with one of Cecil Sharp's versions of Fair Margaret and Sweet William). I generally scan in sheet music and work from those beginning. What all of that means is that I really don't have the knowledge and expertise to recommend anything. However, you are at the right place and no doubt someone else here can suggest something!

Lesley, forgot to tell you that I'm argentine and the choir is the Wagnerian Association of Buenos Aires, this would make it clearer for you why an English or American song may be unusual. Thanks!

Lesley, what an excellent page ! Somehow this should be a recommended link from the Mudcat (if it is already a link, I've not seen it).
May I ask you a favor ? I have to study a song or aria for an admittance audition in a top choir (classical) in late February. Everybody goes with an old Italian aria, I would like to present something unusual, as an old English or American song could be. It should be sufficiently demanding in range, expression and rythm for a seasoned tenor or high baritone. I'm 53, good experience, an fluent in English (this may cause a good impression too) - what would you recommend ?
Please don't feel obligated at all, I could also choose a Haendel's aria or so many others, but those in your list looked very attractive.

Jeepers Rachel, if you can't find an old song here you won't find them anywhere. What are you looking for specifically? Heart songs? Ballads? Songs that trappers may have taken into the Wind Rivers? Politcal tunes that fit the climate of the day? They are all in here. Drop the GUEST apel and move in for a long stay.
