Subject: BS: Oscars 2024 From: keberoxu Date: 10 Mar 24 - 07:53 PM Anybody else watching the Academy Awards tonight? |
Subject: RE: BS: Oscars 2024 From: JennieG Date: 10 Mar 24 - 08:23 PM It's all about the frocks and the jools......the movies themselves are incidental. |
Subject: RE: BS: Oscars 2024 From: Donuel Date: 10 Mar 24 - 09:49 PM it is about the music as well. I'm enjoying the tunes, performers and composers. The comedy is a plus. |
Subject: RE: BS: Oscars 2024 From: Stilly River Sage Date: 10 Mar 24 - 10:15 PM It's ok; ho-hum. I haven't seen any of the films. |
Subject: RE: BS: Oscars 2024 From: Backwoodsman Date: 11 Mar 24 - 04:14 AM Overpaid ‘Luvvies’ gushing and patting each other on the back, and getting trophies for simply doing what they’re already very highly paid to do. Vomit-inducing horse-shite. |
Subject: RE: BS: Oscars 2024 From: Doug Chadwick Date: 11 Mar 24 - 06:09 AM Nobody is forced to watch the Oscars. If overpaid 'luvvies' want to pat each other on the back, then let them get on with it. Award ceremonies of any kind are not for me but, hey, live and let live. DC |
Subject: RE: BS: Oscars 2024 From: Backwoodsman Date: 11 Mar 24 - 07:07 AM ”Nobody is forced to watch the Oscars.” You’re absolutely correct, and I don’t. You have an opinion, and so do I. I’m just as entitled to express my opinion as you are to express yours. To each his own. |
Subject: RE: BS: Oscars 2024 From: keberoxu Date: 11 Mar 24 - 11:31 AM I was happy to see Robert Downey Jr. win his Best Supporting Actor award. His climb to the summit has been more torturous than most, with downward spirals that included spending time behind bars. |
Subject: RE: BS: Oscars 2024 From: JennieG Date: 11 Mar 24 - 04:22 PM I found the frocks disappointing, this year. |
Subject: RE: BS: Oscars 2024 From: Stilly River Sage Date: 11 Mar 24 - 10:34 PM JennieG, fewer of them required yards of double-stick tape to hold them firmly in place on either side of bare breastbones! |
Subject: RE: BS: Oscars 2024 From: JennieG Date: 11 Mar 24 - 10:41 PM Indeed - I noticed that, SRS! The boobage wasn't as terrifying this year, not only for the Oscars but for footage I had seen of other awards. |
Subject: RE: BS: Oscars 2024 From: G-Force Date: 12 Mar 24 - 09:28 AM I don't take much interest normally, but this year I was hoping Robbie Robertson might win best original score, but sadly no. RIP Robbie. |
Subject: RE: BS: Oscars 2024 From: keberoxu Date: 15 Mar 24 - 07:27 PM The film Zone of Interest won a single award for the engineering of sound: the undercurrent of noises below the main sound level. In this film about the house next door to Auschwitz, a commander's family go about a bourgeois lifestyle in mundane ordinary detail, while the noises of Auschwitz -- screams, etc. -- are dimly heard. It is important for someone like me to know about this ahead of possibly seeing the film -- I haven't seen it -- because I am very sensitive to sound and the sound alone probably would have given me nightmares. But the film is not intended to pacify viewers, but to shake them up. |
Subject: RE: BS: Oscars 2024 From: robomatic Date: 16 Mar 24 - 01:38 PM I have 'variable' respect for the Oscars, depending of course, and how they relate to my personal opinions. Also, they go longer than my current attention span. When I tuned in, I thought Jimmy Kimmel was doing an above average job of looking good, talking more or less appropriately, and maintaining audience comfort and viewer interest. I like most actors and I love movies, Even bad movies are a contributor to the range of choice we all have, and in spite of reviewers one doesn't always know what will prove to be a bad movie. Ever since watching Westerns at an advanced age (older than twelve), I've become aware of the range of manipulation that is used on all of us by the restrictions imposed by lighting, framing, focus, and especially soundtrack. I wonder what the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral would have been with just the shots, the grunts, the swears, and NO MUSIC BACKDROP nor intro/ outro chords. One recommendation: A holocaust movie that I only heard about and saw recently: "Persian Lessons". I'd be interested in what other folks think of it. |
