Subject: Lyr Req: Early in the Morning before...
From: GUEST,Len Wallace

I am trying to find the lyrics to a disgusting and humorous ditty. The chorus goes:

Early in the morning, early in the morning

Early in the morning, before the break of day.

Early being sung as "ear-leye"

Some of the verses go something like this:

Wake up Mary, get out of bed

Try if you are able

Wake up Mary, you sleep head

We need your sheets for the table.

And

Off to the butcher shop we go

a sheep's head for to eat

But please don't poke its little eyes out

It has to see us through the week.

Any chance others heard of this song?

The Clancy Brothers sang a children's song with that chorus which included the following two verses:

When I was young I had no sense,
I bought a fiddle for eighteen pence.
The only tune that I could play
Was "Over the Hills and Very Far Away"

My Aunt Jane she called me in;
She gave me tea out of her wee tin,
Half a bag of sugar on the top
And three black lumps out of her wee shop.

For those who were interested, I did manage to find a few disgusting verses for "Early in the Morning". Same tune as the one Makem and the Clancy Bros. sing.

EARLY IN THE MORNING

Wake up. Mary. Get out of bed
Try if you are able.
Breakfast is ready, so shake out the lice.
We need your sheets for the table.

CHORUS: Early in the morning, early in the morning,
Early in the morning before the break of day.

Mary had a little lamb.
Her daddy shot it dead.
Now she goes to school with it
Between two slices of bread.

Jack be nimble. Jack be quick.
Jack jumped over a candle stick.
Silly boy, he should have jumped higher!
Goodness, gracious, balls of fire!

Georgie Porgy, pudding and pie,
Kissed the girls and made them cry.
When the boys came out to play
He kissed them too because he played both ways.

(I changed the last few words from the homophobic "because he was funny that way.")

Here's another one ;
Old King Cole was a merry old soul
He played with his soldiers in bed
But when he was tired of his major's and general's
He played with his privates instead
Cheers Bill

Blue Marday (sp?)

Lazy Mary you better get up,
She answered back I am not able,
Lazy Mary you better get up,
We need the sheet for the table,

something semi pop & quasi Italian from the early 60's I think sung by Jerry Vale among others Barry
