I hope that this north CA quake doesn't shake loose the locked up San Andreas fault. San Fran is reporting large waves.

SAN FRANCISCO -- USGS says that a magnitude 7.0 earthquake has hit Northern California in Humboldt County.

A tsunami warning has been issued by the National Weather Service.

It was initially reported as a 6.6 quake but then was upgraded by USGS.

The quake was felt in San Francisco and Sacramento, but no damage was reported. The San Francisco Zoo was evacuated because of the tsunami warnings - the zoo is right on the edge of the beach near San Francisco State University and Lake Merced. We didn't feel the earthquake at all here in Applegate in the Sierra Foothills.

Is this close enough to set off the Cascadia fault?

Thing about earthquakes: they should really be expressed by two figures - the first the magnitude, the second the depth. A magnitude 7 quake deep in the earth is generally less serious than it sounds, but if it's shallow that's going to spell trouble.

Hi, Jack - Thursday's quake was near the intersection of the San Andreas Faults off the coast of Northern California. All I heard were good reports at the time - shaking but no damage in San Francisco and Sacramento. It wasn't until the weekend that I heard that the effects were much stronger in the Mendocino-Fort Bragg area on the coast north of San Francisco. There was some damage in Mendocino County, but I haven't heard of anything serious. Forecasters are still saying that "the big one" is yet to come. There's a lot of pressure on those two faults, and something's gotta give. I'm glad I'm inland.
