This is a big storm.
Lots of snow to the north, rain to the south, and a treacherous zone
of freezing rain in between.
And it's going to be here for a while.
It started, in western Massachusetts, before sundown.
it is to continue all night and all day tomorrow.
And then some really frigid air is supposed to move in with gusty winds
and really make it feel like winter.

How are other people holding up in this storm?
Max must be feeling it in Pennsylvania, for one.

Supposed to be very cold here Tuesday through Thursday and looks like precipitation on Wednesday. The Weather.gov color coded map looks pretty chilly for the entire upper tier and an extension down through the Midwest into the northern reaches of Texas. (It looks like right now there is a "severe thunderstorm warning" mustard yellow over Mudcat Central.)

The storm knocked out the power but the hospital has heat power and Wi Fi so I'm all set. Hmmm my NIH card doesn't work anymore.
The cats seem to be OK at lower house temperatures.

The surgery was canceled and the power is back on at home in time for a foot of snow starting tomorrow.

It's STILL snowing in New England;
there is much frozen slush and ice underfoot,
and a stiff wind is blowing.
A good day to stay indoors and keep warm.

Today the workers were out clearing ice from sidewalks and pavement.
Between the snow and the freezing rain,
there was a layer one inch thick,
but not solid ice -- full of holes and crunchy underfoot.
THey had to chop at it with shovels.
But at least now we don't have to walk on shifty ice.

In Toronto there were 2 feet of snow which probably played a role in an airliner breaking off its left wing and landing upside down relatively safely.

No, Donuel; witnesses and authorities at Pearson all say the runway was clean and dry. The aircraft did not “flare” — that is, raise its nose — as it touched down, and the port side landing gear collapsed., hence the flip.

Meanwhile, in Stratford (150 km or so west of Pearson Airport), the snow continues to fall. Choir practice has been cancelled again, and schools all over southwestern Ontario are closed. From my front window, I can see about two feet of snow on my neighbours’ rooves, and the snow out back is up to the top of the patio table.

Yesterday I went out with a shovel to dig out the furnace vent and the gas meter. (I don’t have snowshoes any more, a deficiency I intend to correct.) I sank deep into the snow and managed to wallow about half-way around the house before I fell over. I struggled for a good ten minutes before I finally managed to regain my feet; every time I tried to brace myself, I sank deeper, as if in quicksand. Fortunately, I was warmly dressed and I had the shovel!

I have no patience with those who rhapsodize about the beauty of snow in February.

Charmion, as frustrating as that trip into the yard was, I would have liked to have seen it (chuckling only because you appear to be unharmed). Trying to call for help with a phone would mean digging it out and exposing skin, so probably a last resort?

One of these days someone is going to start posting about the leaking roof problem of ice dams.

I miss gnu's posts about the snow around his and his mom's house.

There is so little precipitation here that the few flakes have drifted against the edge of the lawn beside the bare concrete of the driveway.

Come to Alaska. Here, in Southeast, it is 35 degrees and partly sunny. All of our snow is old and hardpacked.
